Getting there

NB: These prices do not include flights. Traditionally, tour operators have received preferential rates from airlines. However, given the availability of flights on the Internet, we believe it is now cheaper to source medium and long haul flights when you book your holiday. Generally speaking, the earlier you book, the cheaper the flights. We will still book these flights on your behalf ensuring that you are fully protected financially under our ATOL (No.6865).

Day 1: Arrivals and transfers
You will be greeted on arrival at Kajaani Airport and transferred directly to your hotel accommodation in Kuhmo, Hotel Kalevala. You will be able to settle in before dinner is served in the restaurant.

Day 2: Canoe tour and Petola Nature Centre
After breakfast you will be given full guidance before you set off in your canoes to Harakkasaari Island. You will also make a stop at the Petola Nature Centre which provides an excellent background on the region and the natural environment specifically the carnivores such as the brown bear, lynx, wolf and wolverine.

This afternoon you will have free time to relax, try optional activities or visit the spa for some treatments. Dinner will be served at the hotel restaurant.

Day 3 and 4: Wilderness Base Kuikka and wildlife observations
After breakfast you will be transferred the 40 minutes to the Eastern border and to Wilderness Base Kuikka. This base is run by Arcticmedia headed up by award winning photographer Mr Lassi Rautiainen. You are in excellent hands when it comes to spotting wildlife.

Over a coffee the following days adventures will be explained to you and there will be time for a swim in the lake or a sauna. An early dinner will be served and then it is time to take to the hides and spend the night observing wildlife.

You will return to base on the morning of day 4 for breakfast and a sauna. There will be free time for relaxing throughout the day and then after an early dinner you will head back to the hides for futher encounters.

Day 5: Beaver tour and bird watching
After returning from the hides, a good breakfast and a sauna you will have the morning to relax.

In the afternoon you will be taken on a gentle rowing tour on the lake to see a Beaver nest and hopefully spot the elusive animal itself. Upon your return there will be an early dinner and then afterwards you will head out on a bird watching tour. You will attempt to spot some of the vast array of bird life that inhabits the region.

Day 6: Photo hike
Today you will be treated to a photographic hike. During which you will be shown some techniques for capturing the wonders of the forest. You will stop for a picnic lunch and hopefully come back with some fabulous shots.

After dinner at the lodge you will head for a fishing trip and see what you can catch on the lake. Upon your return an evening snack will be served and you can relax in the sauna.

Day 7: Free Day
Today you will be transferred back to Hotel Kalevala for you and you will have time to relax at the hotel or try one of the optional activities from the hotel's weekly programme such as Nordic walking and peat saunas.

Day 8: Departure
You will be transferred back to the airport today for your return flights home.

The multi activity week takes place in the heart of one of Europe's last remaining wilderness areas and this holiday will take you deep into the hidden depths of the Taiga. This area is on the far eastern border of Finland and for many seems inaccessible. Our base, however, provides the ideal gateway to this landscape.

This holiday combines some soft activities such as hiking and paddling with some truly amazing natural encounters. Bears, wolves (including the very rare grey wolves), beaver, wolverine, reindeer and a vast array of birds all inhabit the area and your chances of seeing these animals up close is improved by the excellent observation hides which you will use. The hides are actually situated in the no mans land between Finland and Russia so you spend time between the two countries in an area where nature provides the jurisdiction.

The hotel nestles on the shores of Lake Lammasjarvi in North East Finland. There are 47 en suite rooms situated at Kalevala, all are equipped with TV, radio, telephone, hairdryer and mini bar.

The hotel itself features a restaurant with an excellent reputation for food which serves some Finnish and Russian specialities as well as some more international options.

There is also a spa where a variety of massages can be arranged and a sauna available for guests.

Wilderness Base Kuikka

Kuikka is exactly what it says - a wilderness base. The accommodation is comfortable, clean and very welcoming but is by no means 5 star accommodation. The base is designed to give you access to one of the remotest areas of Europe and that is exactly what it does.

There are 8 rooms within the base sleeping between 2 and 5 people in each. Toilet, shower and sauna facilities are shared and dining takes place in the central dining area. You can all gather to discuss the sights that you have seen and examine your photographs.

Wilderness Hides

The hides are designed to give you the best opportunities to see wildlife and this generally means that you will be based here in darkness and through the nights.

The hides vary in size and equipment however there is generally a sleeping area, a seating area and compostable toilet facilities. The good news is that you should be too busy watching bear to worry about going to sleep anyway. Snacks and hot drinks are always available.
