There are so many things to commend this holiday that it is rather hard to put them all down here. Firstly there is the unique accommodation, owned and run by the ever professional and incredibly friendly Simone, the delicious Tuscan cuisine and the exciting range of activities on offer. Secondly the proximity of Lucca, Florence and Pisa means that in your free time there is a lot to see and do. Lastly there is the outdoor swimming pool with views across the rolling Tuscan countryside and the outdoor pizza oven in the gardens of the accommodation. Combined, these all make for an incredible family holiday.

During your stay you will take full advantage of the Tuscan landscape during your activities which include rock climbing, orienteering, canyoning, an introduction to caving and cycling. We also host a very popular pizza making night and wine tasting for the grown-ups!

Suitable for

Families with children aged nine years and over (please note that this does not preclude younger children but participation in the activities will be at the discretion of our instructors).

14th Century Tuscan Farmhouse

Your accommodation for this week in Tuscany is a beautiful 14th century farmhouse built in the traditional Tuscan style. The farmhouse has been lovingly renovated by your host Simone into several independent apartments. These are all different in design, but all have a fully equipped kitchen, living room with satellite TV and phone.

There is seating around the gardens of the farmhouse and an outdoor swimming pool. There is also an outside BBQ area and pizza oven which guests are welcome to use to cook their food.

The farmhouse is set amongst the rolling Tuscan hills, just 700 metres from the birth place of Leonardo Da Vinci and a few miles outside the town of Vinci itself. Set in 60 acres of fields and woods it offers amazing views towards Lucca and the coast which you can also enjoy from the terrace and the swimming pool.

Please note: The layout of each apartment is different and we will endeavour to accommodate your family in the most appropriate for your needs but places are limited and we recommend booking as early as possible.

Saturday: Arrival and welcome
Upon arrival in Vinci, you are welcome to arrive at the apartments any time after 2pm. There will be time for you to settle in and enjoy the swimming pool before a welcome meal this evening.

Sunday: Welcome to Tuscany
Your first day has been left free for you to get better acquainted with your surroundings. You may like to relax and enjoy the wonderful swimming pool or drive down to the town of Vinci to get your bearings. Alternatively some of Italy’s most historic cities, Florence and Pisa, are around an hour’s drive away. Your host Simone will be happy to help you decide and make recommendations.

Monday: Rock climbing
The first activity of the week is rock climbing and Simone will choose the most suitable site, depending on the group’s ability and the weather. All equipment is provided and the group will take it in turns to climb with the guides’ assistance and encouragement helping along the way. This is a great first activity and introduces you to the Tuscan countryside.

This afternoon we suggest driving to the nearby towns of Volterra or Lucca. Both have a rich and fascinating history and are highly recommended.

Tuesday: Cave and cascade adventure
This is the only destination where we feature caving and it’s one of the highlights of your week here. You will walk, climb and abseil into the heart of Tuscany in the La Tana Che Urla caves. Along the route you will discover two underground waterfalls.

On the way back to the farmhouse you will stop to sample one of the most famous attractions in Tuscany, the ice cream!

Wednesday: Free day
Today you may choose how to spend your time. Why not head off and explore one of the nearby historic cities by car or train or ask Simone about some additional activities which can be booked locally. Of course many people choose to simply enjoy the perfectly positioned pool at the farmhouse – the views from the water are spectacular.

Thursday: Canyoning
This is a wonderful family friendly canyon with jumps, slides and abseils. There is always an easier option if you don’t fancy the larger jumps, but nothing beats the exciting rush when you challenge yourself and conquer an obstacle. There’s also a great sense of pride in watching your family members do the same.

Friday: Cycling and pizza making
The area is exceedingly popular with cyclists and you will quickly understand why as you take to two wheels for this final activity today. The route will take you off the beaten track and will allow you to explore the beautiful scenery of Tuscany.

This evening your farewell dinner is something that everyone is sure to enjoy as you set about the task of pizza making!

Everyone will create their own pizza master piece using their chosen toppings before cooking it in the traditional outdoor oven. Then comes the best part - the tasting... Buon Appetito!

Saturday: Depart or extend your stay
It’s time to leave Tuscany today and start your journey home, of course you can extend your stay should you wish.

Minimum numbers: This holiday typically requires a minimum of four participants to operate. If there are fewer than four people booked, which is very unlikely, we will do all that we can to operate the holiday as planned. If this is not possible then you will be informed nine weeks prior to your departure date and all available options will be discussed with you.

Pricing: Price is based on minimum two adults (15 and over) and one child (9-14) sharing an apartment.

Getting there

This is a self-drive holiday and clients will require a car during their stay. If you prefer to fly to Italy we can arrange flights and car hire on your behalf.

If you decide to drive from the UK the estimated round trip fuel cost from London to Tuscany is £390. The estimated cost for the return ferry crossing is £70.

Our base for this wonderful family activity holiday is in Tuscany steeped in local traditions, culture and is just 700m from the birth place of Leonardo Da Vinci and the stunning town of Vinci.

The 14th century farmhouse we use as our accommodation has been lovingly transformed into apartments as part of an Agriturismo project whilst still retaining a genuine Tuscan 'feel'. Accommodation is strictly limited in the area which allows careful management of tourism in terms of numbers.

Our local partner Simone is pioneering the development of the local economy through tourism and by only working with companies who share his policies on the environment and cultural preservation.

Throughout the week guests are encouraged to try the local flavours. Through pizza making lessons, olive oil tasting and Italian cookery lessons families will learn about the fantastic local dishes and help to preserve the traditional recipes.

Guests are encouraged to interact with the local community and use the local shops to purchase produce throughout the week. The purchasing of local products spreads the benefits of tourism throughout the wider community.

Alistair Mclean - Activities Abroad
Our Opinion

“I first visited Simone at his farmhouse in 1998 and have been back four times with my family. You get to see some amazing parts of the world in my job but this farmhouse has a very special place in my heart. It’s a hard place to leave! The freedom of having your own car opens up so many options from the beautiful coast to a choice of wonderful hill top towns and Renaissance cities.”  Ali Mclean

Our Customers' Feedback

My husband and I have just returned from a fabulous holiday in Tuscany staying at the idyllic Casa Carbonaia with Activities Abroad. We met 2 lovely families whilst there both families having also booked their activity holiday with Activities Abroad. The accommodation was very comfortable and set among the Tuscan hills with views down the valley looking onto the historic town of Vinci.  Whilst there we hired mountain bikes from our host Simone and enjoyed a number of days cycling up and down the valley riding alongside Italian cyclists.  Simone was great, giving advice about where to go and eat and offering useful tips to enable us to make the most of our stay. A wonderful holiday would recommend to both couples and families and hopefully we will return.
