We know...

Abisko has been scientifically designated as one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights. It is situated smack in the middle of The Aurora Zone and due to its topography there are very rarely cloudy skies. Basically, Abisko is surrounded by a bowl of mountains which, along with very favourable prevailing winds, break up much, or all, of any encroaching cloud cover making it an Aurora hunting paradise.

By a happy quirk of fate, Abisko is also only 100km from the magnificent ICEHOTEL® so we’ve added a night there for good measure. Few places can offer such a combination

Luckily for us we have some great friends Dick and Mina Johansson, fantastic people, who run an exceptional mountain lodge. Dick is one of Europe’s best known mountain guides and he and his excellent team will ensure that you are always in the safest possible hands during your activities.

Level 1 is designed as a gentle tour where guests do not miss out on anything but the pace is more sedate and relaxed.

Suitable for

Anybody aged 18 years or over.

Abisko Mountain Lodge

Abisko Mountain Lodge - Sweden

Abisko Mountain Lodge

Abisko Mountain Lodge is the brainchild of Mina and Dick Johansson, two people with an unsurpassed passion for their surroundings and for whom, we at Activities Abroad have a huge amount of respect.

Dick and Mina’s vision was to provide a comfortable retreat for visitors who want to make the most of Abisko’s stunningly beautiful environment and its spectacular Northern Lights. There’s a warm and welcoming ambience here at Abisko and after an afternoon in the snow, it’s lovely to return for an excellent dinner in splendid company. Of course, the Aurora Borealis will very possibly interrupt your meal but that’s the chance you take here in Swedish Lapland.

The lodge has only 20 rooms (they can be like gold dust so we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment). All the bedrooms are simply furnished and comfortable with an en suite shower and toilet room. Generally they have twin beds (which in some cases can be pulled together) and hanging hooks for clothes (a drying room is also available). There are no televisions in the rooms. Your hosts want guests to spend time either outdoors or in the comfy lounge and bar area relaxing and chatting together......it’s a sociable kind of place!

The whole lodge has wireless broadband so you can keep in touch with the outside world if you wish (however we recommend just forgetting about it).

The restaurant has recently acquired the coveted Sapmi Slow Food status and provides excellent meals using locally sourced produce. Breakfast is a buffet and your evening meal will be a set menu created from delicious local ingredients. These are all show cased during your last night at Abisko when you tuck into their special Lappish menu.

Day 1: Flights, arrival and transfers
You will be greeted at Kiruna Airport from where the transfer to Abisko takes you along the one of the most scenic drives in Northern Scandinavia. On arrival at the lodge you’ll be warmly welcomed and have some time to settle in before dinner. Always remember to keep your coat handy though as the Aurora has interrupted numerous meals at Abisko!

Day 2: Ice fishing and Aurora snowshoe trek
This morning you will head out onto the frozen surface of beautiful Lake Tornetrask with your guide to try one of the most popular Scandinavian activities, ice fishing. You’ll drill a hole in the thick ice, sit on a warm reindeer skin and wait for the fish to bite. Whilst you wait for the line to twitch you will have time to admire the wild and wonderful mountain scenery that surrounds you.

You will have a picnic lunch (weather permitting) and if you land a decent sized catch you may be able to supplement this with a fish course.

After dinner at the lodge you will head off in search of the Northern Lights on snowshoes.

Your local and experienced guide will lead you to one of his favourite view points, a place where the views of the night sky are exceptional. Hopefully you will see the unforgettable Aurora dancing across the Arctic skies.

Day 3: Husky safari
The terrain around Abisko is rather rugged and wild and to allow you to fully appreciate your surroundings, your guide will drive the team while you ride in the sled allowing you to enjoy the spectacular views.

If you would prefer to drive your own team (two people per sled) then this can be arranged in advance. Please note however, that dog sledding here is fairly strenuous and you should be should be in reasonable physical condition as it can be hard work.

As this is designed as a gentle programme, the afternoon is free for you to relax. If you feel the need for a little more excitement we can arrange a snowmobile safari. This is an excellent way to explore and see as much as possible of the Abisko hinterland. Snowmobiling is a popular activity so we recommend arranging this in advance (please see price box for details).

As this will be your last night in Abisko you will be treated to the full Lappish menu which includes local delicacies but remember to keep one eye on the night sky at all times.

Day 4: Sámi culture and the ICEHOTEL®
This morning it is time to wave goodbye to Abisko and head towards the town of Jukkasjarvi, and the ICEHOTEL®. En route you’ll visit at a traditional Sámi homestead where you learn about the lives of the Sámi reindeer herders and the importance of reindeer in the culture of the region. A light lunch will be served around a fire.

The journey then continues to the world famous ICEHOTEL®. You will arrive in the afternoon and be given a guided tour of the site, the ice suites and the ice factory. You can have dinner at one of the warm restaurants (not included in the holiday price), perhaps take advantage of the ice bar and will spend the night in a snow room. If you would like to upgrade your cold accommodation and stay in an ice room or suite then we can arrange this for you. The suites and Northern Lights rooms are spectacular so you may want to treat yourself.

We also understand that spending the night in a cold room is not everyone’s cup of tea so we can arrange a stay in the warm accommodation on the ICEHOTEL® site (see price box for details).

Day 5: Departure
After breakfast you will be transferred to Kiruna Airport for your homeward flights.

Getting there

All departure dates are subject to availability.

Abisko is set amidst spectacular countryside and has grown up around the rail link to Kiruna. It is spectacularly remote and surrounded by vast, pristine landscapes. The small number of tourist establishments in this village provide a vital lifeline for many of the local people through providing employment and economic benefits to local businesses. This all helps to reduce the amount of rural-urban movement which damages many of these areas.

The Abisko Mountain lodge has a strict policy regarding responsible travel. Mina and Dick Johansson set up the business principally through Dick's absolute adoration of the environment. As a mountain guide he fully appreciates the fragility of the environment but also how to get the best from it without leaving any trace.

From the moment you arrive you are encouraged to immerse yourself in the region and consider your surroundings. The hotel promotes local produce throughout its meals and gives a real insight into the region as well as supporting local producers as much as possible.

Abisko allows us to spread the benefits of tourism away from some of the tourist hot spots and out into the more remote areas of Swedish Lapland.

Jo Doran, travel expert - Activities Abroad
Our Opinion

"The drive from Abisko to the ICEHOTEL® is my favourite anywhere in the world.  Repeated stops to admire the wonderful lake and mountain scenery usually double my journey time but who cares?  It's simply stunning!." Jo Doran

Our Customers' Feedback

"Had the most amazing time on the trip. Seeing the Northerm Lights was fantastic but the other activities involved in the package just added to having a once in a lifetime experience. Also we were very lucky that our group were also fantastic people and we were continually laughing and enjoying everything!  " Fiona Shaw - Feb 11
