We know...

Abisko has been scientifically designated as one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights. It is situated smack in the middle of the Auroral Zone and due to its topography there are very rarely cloudy skies. Basically, Abisko is surrounded by a bowl of mountains which, along with very favourable prevailing winds, break up much, or all, of any encroaching cloud cover making it an Aurora Hunter’s Paradise.

By a happy quirk of fate, Abisko is also only 100km from the magnificent ICEHOTEL® (see opposite) so we’ve added a night there for good measure. As a destination we don’t think many places can beat Abisko’s package.

Luckily for us we have some great friends Dick and Mina Johansson, fantastic people, who run one of the best mountain lodges anywhere in Scandinavia. Dick is one of Europe’s best known mountain guides and he and his excellent team will ensure that you are always in the safest possible hands. The range of activities on offer provides something for everyone and we have designed two itineraries to ensure that our clients receive the best experiences but with a choice of activity level.

Level 1 is designed as a gentle tour where guests do not miss out on anything but the pace is more sedate and relaxed.

Level 2 caters for those who want longer activities and some added adrenaline so we have included activities such as ice climbing.

Dick Johansson is one of the most well known mountain guides in Europe let alone Sweden so you are in the safest hands and their guides are excellent.

We are extremely excited to be able to offer our clients a new itinerary based at Abisko which hopes to take full advantage of its Northern Lights record.

You know...

“Everyone was so friendly, the food was amazing.  I couldn’t ask for better guides at Abisko. Overall the best holiday I have had.....and my parents say so too and that’s saying something!”   Claire Ledger – December 2010

Abisko Mountain Lodge

Abisko Mountain Lodge - Sweden

This Swedish gem is the brainchild of Mina and Dick Johansson, two people with an unsurpassable passion for their surroundings and for whom, we at Activities Abroad have a huge amount of respect.

To be honest, who can blame them? Incredibly hard working, passionate, friendly, efficient and determined to ensure their clients enjoy the best possible stay.

Dick and Mina have designed their lodge to take full advantage of the Abisko area, its towering mountains, high alpine environment and Lake Torneträsk. They actively encourage all of their guests to get out amidst it all and experience the landscape up close.

The lodge's rooms are cleanly furnished, comfortable and airy. Each has an en suite shower and toilet room.  The whole lodge has wireless broadband so you can keep in touch with the outside world (however we recommend just forgetting about it).

There are no televisions in the rooms. Your hosts want guests to spend time in the comfy lounge, relaxing and chatting together.  The lodge restaurant provides a fabulous range of locally sourced produce; arctic char, smoked venison, elk, to name only a few typical ingredients.

There is passion in every aspect of the lodge as well as the activities. Dick Johansson is one of the most well known mountain guides in Europe let alone Sweden and so you are in ideal hands.

The last time we were there in March 2011, we watched a young adult moose just 25m from the dining room while eating breakfast and abandoned dinner to step outside to see the Aurora.  It's a special kind of place, but be prepared for an interrupted meal or two.

Day 1: Arrival and transfers
You will be greeted upon arrival at Kiruna Airport and transferred to the mountain lodge for dinner.

Day 2: Ice Climbing, husky safari and Aurora snowshoe trek
A jam packed day of activities awaits today. The Abisko Canyon is close to the lodge and with a fully trained guide you'll have fun learning how to ice climb on some of the frozen waterfalls which grace the canyon walls. You will return to the lodge for a lunch break.

Next you will be taken to meet your team of huskies. You will be given full instruction and a safety briefing before you head off onto the trail with your sled, exploring this magnificent landscape.

After dinner you are off again.  This time it's a more leisurely activity - snowshoeing. Your purpose on the trek is to walk to Stornabben where the skies are free of all artificial light. You stand a very good chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis on a clear night here.

Day 3: Snowmobiling
A truly exhilarating experience today as you learn how to handle a powerful snowmobile. You will be given full instruction and a safety briefing before heading out into the wilderness which surrounds Abisko on your snowmobiles on a tour lasting around 4 hours.

As this will be your last night in Abisko you will be treated to the full Lappish dinner serving many delicacies. After dinner it may also be possible to arrange a visit to the Aurora Sky Station (depending on time of year and weather conditions). You take a ski lift to the top of a nearby fell where you visit a Northern Lights exhibition and may get the chance to witness the Aurora Borealis from this truly awesome setting.

Day 4: Sámi Culture and the ICEHOTEL®
This morning it is time to wave goodbye to Abisko and head back towards the town of Kiruna. En route however you stop at a traditional Sami homestead where you’ll learn about the lives of the Sami reindeer herders and the importance of reindeer in the region's culture.

The journey then continues to Jukkasjarvi, home of the world famous ICEHOTEL®. You will arrive in the afternoon and be given a full guided tour of the site, the ice suites and the ice factory. You can have dinner at one of the warm restaurants (not included) and will spend the night in a snow room. If you would like to upgrade your cold accommodation or stay in a warm room then we can arrange this for you, please contact us for a quotation.

Getting there

All departure dates subject to availability.

Abisko is set amidst spectacular countryside and has grown up around the rail link to Kiruna. It is spectacularly remote and surrounded by vast, pristine landscapes. The small number of tourist establishments in this village provide a vital lifeline for many of the local people through providing employment and economic benefits to local businesses. This all helps to reduce the amount of rural-urban movement which damages many of these areas.

The Abisko Mountain lodge has a strict policy regarding responsible travel. Mina and Dick Johansson set up the business principally through Dick's absolute adoration of the environment. As a mountain guide he fully appreciates the fragility of the environment but also how to get the best from it without leaving any trace.

From the moment you arrive you are encouraged to immerse yourself in the region and consider your surroundings.

The hotel promotes local produce throughout its meals and gives a real insight into the region as well as supporting local producers as much as possible.

Abisko allows us to spread the benefits of tourism away from some of the tourist hot spots and out into the more remote areas of Swedish Lapland.

Jo Doran, travel expert - Activities Abroad
Our Opinion

"When I visited Abisko, I returned slightly in awe. This place is wild and it is spectacular. I had visited many parts of Lapland (I am a lucky girl!) but none had left such an impression on me. There isn't really anything surrounding the accommodation here, no shops, no bars…. there in lies its beauty. Abisko also has a reputation for being one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights and has views of Lapporten (Sami Gate) a very important symbol of Lapland both of which add to the atmosphere." Jo Doran

Our Customers' Feedback

"Having returned last night, I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for organising what has possibly been the most extraordinary holiday I have ever experienced, up in Abisko- I saw the most spectacular Northern Lights display (although I appreciate this was luck!) and also the activities were absolutely excellent. The place was beautiful, the ice hotel a really wonderful experience, the people were lovely, the group was nice and small- I literally cannot fault a single thing. I will be recommending this company to anyone who will listen in the future! Thank you again, so so much." Carly Wilkinson - Feb 10
