We know...

The Luosto Cabins are the ideal place to combine a relaxing holiday with some less-strenuous winter activities. A perfect mix of "downtime" and adventure.

Nestling in the fells of Central Lapland is the unspoilt village of Luosto. Located 90 minutes north of the Arctic Circle this small ski resort offers an intimate encounter with the wilderness of Lapland but from a family perspective.

First class activities and accommodation are coupled with a stunning natural environment – a perfect family destination. The local ski slopes are great for beginners and will also provide good entertainment for more experienced skiers.

Suitable for

Singles, couples, families and small groups.

Luosto Log Cabins

Luosto Log Cabin - Finland, Lapland

Luosto
Luosto is set amidst the beautiful fells, forests and lakes of Lapland and is the ideal place for a winter holiday.

The resort is very small and with only two hotels and a selection of cabins it really retains its Lappish charm. There are 7 ski slopes for those who fancy some downhill action on holiday and endless cross country ski trails for anyone who wants to explore the region at their own pace (equipment all available to rent, payable locally).

A small supermarket is also available in the centre of the village and stocks the basics as well as a small selection of fresh meat and vegetables. The inventive cook could certainly self cater but should be aware that the choice is not large. For snacks and lunches the supermarket is ideal. We recommend the half board at the Luosto Tunturi Hotel as an excellent alternative or there are two other restaurants in the village that would provide lunches and evening meals.

For those who want to take a memento home there are two small souvenir shops

The Log Cabins
The idea of returning to a log cabin after a day in the Arctic temperatures, enjoying a relaxing sauna and settling down in front of a blazing fire is extremely enticing. Fortunately, Luosto is renowned for its silver pine cabins and everywhere you go, in and around the village, you’ll see collections of cabins of various shapes and sizes.

The cabins are usually in small terraces or semi-detached and are located in small clusters hidden amongst the snow covered trees. They are almost always privately owned so a standardised description is nigh on impossible as each one varies according to the taste of the proprietor.

Generally speaking, our cabins are situated in a wooded area approximately ten to twenty minute walk from the centre of the village. Please take this into careful consideration if you are booking with young children as you may want to consider the advantages of having the hotel and village facilities close to hand.

Each cabin sleeps between two and five people with one bedroom and an additional loft area with up to three more beds. In addition they also include a sauna, living room/ kitchen area, fireplace, shower/toilet, drying cupboard, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave oven, television, digi-box, coffee maker and a radio.

We’ve included three visits per person to the pool facilities and saunas at the Tunturi hotel, firewood and end of stay cleaning in the holiday price. Most guests choose to include the half board option at the Tunturi Hotel which means a pleasant walk to and from your cabin for breakfast and dinner. It provides good value for money because dining out in Luosto every night can be a costly business.

On your arrival day (if you are arriving fairly late in the day) your first meal (usually a cold platter) will be waiting in your cabin along with breakfast for the following morning so that you can relax in front of your log burning stove and enjoy your new Lappish home.

Restaurants
Half board can be included in your stay and if you are not the most inventive cook then we would recommend this option. The expansive breakfast buffet will set you up nicely up for the day and your evening meal will be a range of salads as well as a buffet choice of main course and a dessert.

If you are staying 6 nights from the 23rd or 30 December 2012 then half board also includes some special menus for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Swimming Pool
A real attraction at the Tunturi Hotel is the pool area and spa facilities and guests staying in the cabins can visit the pool and sauna facilities three times during their stay. Additional visits can be arranged and paid for locally.

The swimming pool is a favourite with families and adults alike and there are massage and waterfall points as well as a jacuzzi in the amethyst cave.

Naturally, this being Finland, there is also a sauna wing with both Turkish and Finnish saunas as well as a small gym.

The Amethyst Spa
The Amethyst Spa offers a range of deliciously relaxing treatments from facials to massages.

We wish that we were able to give first hand advice on all of the treatments but sadly we felt that asking to try each one was a little much. At the time of booking we will provide you with the full list of available treatments and contact details for the spa to arrange any treatments that you wish, they will be able to give you full details about each treatment and advice on which would be the most suitable for you.

Availability can be limited so we recommend that you book any treatments before you travel to avoid any disappointment.

Getting there

All dates are based on direct charter flights from Gatwick to Kittila except:

*6 nights duration with scheduled flights from Heathrow to Rovaniemi (via Helsinki).

Manchester and Bristol departures available with supplement on request.

Tourism in Finnish Lapland has become the main source of employment and income, replacing traditional industries such as forestry. Working within this growth industry in rural and remote areas means that we must take a great deal of responsibility; socially, environmentally and economically.

We fully appreciate the impact of tourist visits on local communities and their residents and strive to ensure that we are having a positive effect. We always encourage all of our clients to respect and embrace the lives and culture of local inhabitants by learning a few important words: hello, goodbye, please, thank you etc.

We have also included activities with a cultural base in our holiday. In addition, we always encourage our clients to get involved in local events and activities which help to sustain traditional values and customs.

In all of our destinations we ensure that we use local suppliers, enabling locally owned businesses and the economies in which they work to benefit directly.

Our suppliers in Luosto provide a vital source of employment throughout the whole region. The restaurant serves as much local produce as possible. Many of our safaris in Luosto also utilise other local enterprises such as the amethyst mine and the remote smoke sauna and restaurant we use in one of our activities is the primary income for a local couple.

Through the tourism multiplier effect, this all helps to generate incomes and employment where the drift might otherwise be towards larger employment areas such as towns and cities. In a small and remote village such as Luosto the effects of such a drift could be devastating.

The use of small businesses means that the tourism income, generated by our presence, stays where it should, in the local economy. We firmly believe in paying a fair price for all the services provided by our suppliers regardless of where they are in the world.

Our holidays rely on visiting beautiful and un-spoilt areas, and they don't come more un- spoilt than Luosto. Naturally we wish to maintain the natural settings in which we work, not just for the future of our company, but also for future generations. We always insist that our local providers are equally conscious of this.

The wooden chalets that we use as accommodation are built using sustainable timbers and are all extremely well insulated to ensure maximum efficiency.

We do appreciate that some may feel that snowmobiles should not be included in such itineraries however in areas such as Luosto they are a way of life. They are the only means of keeping in contact with remote reindeer herders and communities as the road infrastructure is not extensive.

All trails are well managed. The alternatives to snowmobiles would in most cases be large, gas-guzzling off road vehicles. All snowmobiles are regularly serviced and kept as fuel efficient as possible. Our suppliers also utilise new 4-stroke engines that are less polluting.

The snowmobile service industry is also another vital source of employment in these remote areas. We always ensure that all litter is removed from any of our activity sites, we strongly encourage group transfers to reduce traffic volumes and we make our clients aware of their obligation to the environment.

We always offset our air travel emissions and would encourage you to do the same.

Our Opinion

"I love Luosto and as one of the first winter destinations I visited it still remains a firm favourite! Luosto has something to offer everyone whether it's the wonderful swimming pool at the Luosto Tunturi Hotel, the ski slopes at the top of the village or the fantastic activities which anybody can enjoy. For a special treat try one of the suites at the Tunturi Hotel or, for romantics, how about a log cabin in the woods with your own private sauna and roaring log fire?" Amy Griffiths
