You could soon find yourselves journeying to South America’s equatorial rainforests and clambering up the Andes, or exploring the jungles of Borneo in Southeast Asia and swimming around its vivid reefs. Best of all, these trips have flexible departure dates, so you can go anytime – just enquire!
You might be tempted by Costa Rica, frequently ranked as one of the happiest countries on Earth. Despite being a rather tiny place, covering just 0.01% of our planet’s landmass, it is jam-packed with life, home to 5% of the world’s species of flora and fauna.
Our itinerary allows you to drop right in the middle of it all in the most active manner possible. Take a boat trip through Tortuguero National Park and get wildlife-watching; camp in the rainforest of Sarapiquí and go white-water rafting and zip-wiring nearby. You’ll also hike by a volcano and help plant trees at a forest estate.
There’s Ecuador, where you’ll spend some time touring Quito, 2,850 metres above sea level. One of the highest capital cities on the planet, it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site with a beautiful mix of indigenous and Spanish architecture. Adventures around mountains of fire lie ahead: horse-ride like traditional Chagra cowboys through the country’s Avenue of Volcanoes, cycle in the direction of active Cotopaxi, and descend Tungurahua on mountain bikes! You will also spend time in the Amazon Basin, resting in an eco-lodge and rafting the Napo River: the ‘Big River’, to translate its local Kichwa name ‘Jatun Yacu’.
Follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and visit the Galápagos Islands. You’ll see just as much stunning wildlife as the great man himself: giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions, and penguins being just a few! Now, Darwin may have gone on to change the course of history, but he definitely didn’t have the chance to go mountain biking on the luscious inland trails that can be found here, as you will. Sea kayaking and snorkelling will get you familiar with all kinds of underwater life found in bustling reefs by the shore, while a hike of the Sierra Negra volcano will give you the most amazing panoramas.
Back on the mainland, we take you all over Peru, from the depths of its jungles to the heights of its awe-inspiring Andes Mountains. Go on a night-time caiman search in the Amazon Rainforest and scale a 30 metre-high canopy to get a bird’s-eye view of this green world. Fly through history with a zip-wire course through the Sacred Valley of the Incas – we’ve also reserved a whole day for you to look about the ancient site of Machu Picchu and marvel at its extraordinary ruins. There will be plenty of opportunities to connect with local communities, from textile-making with the residents of Patabamba, to visiting the floating islands crafted out of reeds by the Uros People.
Leaving South America, you might fancy our holidays to the island of Borneo: it’s an animal-lover’s paradise! You’ll head to several internationally renowned conservation centres to see the inspiring work that takes place there. Learn about sun bear and proboscis monkey protection, as well as heading behind the scenes at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Sanctuary – keep your eyes out for these highly intelligent creatures of the forest. At the mighty Gomantong Caves, you’ll be able to look at the secret life of the birds and bats that flutter inside. We’ve also got some unique activities depending on which holiday you pick. On our Borneo ‘Family Adventure’, you can zip-wire between two Malaysian islands using the impressive ‘Coral Flyer’. Choose our scuba diving trip and you’ll be receiving PADI-certified scuba-diving schooling among some of the planet’s prettiest reefs.
Shoot across to any of our long-haul destinations and full-scale adventures are guaranteed: exhilarating action, natural sights, and far-off cultures that the whole family can share.
Tiny Costa Rica explodes with adventure: boat trips through Tortuguero National Park, rainforest camps and river rafting, ecological conservation activities, and guided walks near an active volcano!
In Borneo, you can get up close to orang-utan and sun bears protection centres. When you aren’t zip-wiring between islands, scuba-diving with turtles, or exploring a real bat-cave, of course.
