Kittila is a small town in the North West corner of Finland. It presents guests with the chance to stay in an Arctic community as well as offering some unique active experiences for families.
This holiday is packed with a wealth of activities which include snowmobiling, dog sledding, a visit to a reindeer farm, ice fishing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. There are, however, additional highlights here which are not available in other destinations and these include a memorable meal in an ice restaurant and the chance to spend two days downhill skiing in the famous resort of Levi. With all of the aforementioned activities included in the holiday price we think this holiday offers exceptional value for families.
The simple, yet utterly welcoming hotel accommodation gets praise from our families each and every year and the staff here will do all that they can to make your stay in Lapland as good as it can be. The hotel is a great place to meet the local people as it is a lunchtime hive of activity with people calling in for their famous buffet and in the evenings the Pilot’s Bar is a place to hear tales from the town. Whilst this trip gives you the chance of seeing modern life in Lapland, you will also gain an understanding of the traditions and culture of the region; a wonderful experience for adults and children alike.
Throughout this holiday you leave the town behind you and head out on the activities to explore the vast wilderness around Kittila, a landscape which is simply stunning and totally unlike any that you are likely to have encountered before. The cherry on the cake here is also that the area is well within the Aurora Zone, meaning that it is an excellent place from which to see the Northern Lights. Within 5 minutes of the hotel you can stand in a viewpoint, away from the town’s lights and keep watch of the northern skies for a display.
Day 1 Flights, arrival and introduction
You will be greeted upon arrival at the airport and transferred to Hotel Kittila. On most dates this means less than 5 minutes drive from Kittila Airport to the hotel.
Some flights do arrive late in the evening and so depending on your arrival time you shall either enjoy dinner in the hotel restaurant or a light chilled supper at the hotel. If you arrive on an earlier flight then your guide will meet with you this evening to discuss the days ahead, if you arrive later then this is likely to take place the following morning so you can head straight to bed on arrival.
Day 2 Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing
Today your Lappish adventure starts in earnest with the chance to enjoy one of the most popular local pastimes. Your guide will make sure that you are kitted out with all of your winter clothing and will fit you with a pair of snowshoes ahead of your first foray into the wilds of Lapland.
Snowshoes enable you to explore areas of deep snow and to see the delights of the Lappish landscape at close quarters; it is an ideal way to be introduced to your new surroundings and is great fun for all the family.
Following lunch you will be back out again for a cross-country skiing lesson. As you explore the area you will see families of all ages out on the trails together as it is a true favourite in Lapland. After some initial instruction and some time to practice you will glide along some of the trails which head out from the town and into the delightful countryside.
If you wish to explore further then the skis and snowshoes are available to hire at the hotel so you can head out independently if you wish.
A hearty buffet will be served in the restaurant tonight to round off your first full day in Lapland.
Day 3 Torassieppi Reindeer Farm, Winter Village and husky safari
After a good breakfast this morning you will transfer to Torassieppi Reindeer Farm which dates back over 100 years. Reindeer are of great importance to the indigenous Sámi people and whilst here, you will gain an insight into reindeer herding and to the culture and traditions of the area.
Of course you will also be able to get close to the reindeer and ask the herder any questions you may have before you take to a sleigh for a 3 kilometre reindeer sleigh ride through the forests (one to two people per sled).
Following on from your reindeer encounters you will head to the adjacent Winter Village at Torassieppi where lunch will be served in the ice restaurant! This unique experience gives you the chance to see the ice and snow architecture which is created from scratch each winter and is sure to fascinate adults and children alike.
The day continues with what is sure to be a true holiday highlight as you head to the kennels and meet with the huskies who are eagerly awaiting your arrival. Everyone will be shown around and this is a great chance to gain an understanding of the day to day lives of these working dogs. Then it is time to take to the trails with your teams for a 9km safari.
Full instruction will be given prior to departure and you will travel two people per sled. Typically children will travel in a sled and adults will drive. Older children may have the chance to drive at the guide’s discretion.
Back in Kittila tonight you will have much to relive over dinner and will surely be ready for a good night’s sleep.
Day 4 Visit to Levi
Levi is the most famous downhill ski resorts in Lapland with 43 downhill pistes and 27 lifts, it hosts the ski world cup each year. Regardless of whether downhill slopes are your thing, the resort is a great place to explore. Transfers from Kittila are provided for you along with lunch in a local restaurant, and you may choose to spend your day exactly how you wish.
For those who wish to hit the slopes you can hire skis and arrange passes easily in the resort. For others, the town itself offers an array of shops and cafes to enjoy, alongside the chance to take in the many cross country trails or snowshoe tracks if you prefer to head out of town.
Back at the hotel dinner will be served, after which guests can enjoy a post dinner stroll in search of the Northern Lights. Within a short walk of the hotel you can find yourself in dark skies and in a wonderful viewpoint, the hotel staff will happily point you in the right direction.
Day 5 Snowmobiles and ice fishing
Snowmobiling is thrilling and always offers the chance to explore further into the wilderness.
Following a safety briefing and snowmobile driving lesson, you will set off on a safari across the snow-covered landscape, with the forest and lake scenery offering a spectacular backdrop to the experience. You will travel two adults per snowmobile (the driver must hold a full driving licence), with children under 15 travelling in a sled pulled by the guide’s snowmobile.
Your destination will be a frozen lake where you will try your hand at ice fishing. Your guide will show you how to drill through the ice and drop your lines into the icy water below. Now all you need is some patience and some luck! Regardless of whether you land a catch this is a great experience and as you eat lunch around a campfire you can really soak up your surroundings. In total you will have covered around 30 kilometres on snowmobiles before you arrive back at the hotel.
Day 6 Free day or optional activities
We have left today free so that you may tailor the final day of your family holiday. Many people like to hire cross-country skis or snowshoes for a final venture or add in an additional activity locally. The town of Kittila offers a selection of shops to enjoy as an alternative and of course the hotel sauna can prove to be an attraction for some. If you wish to travel back to Levi for a second day on the slopes then you can take a local bus or alternatively, the hotel can easily arrange a taxi for you.
You will enjoy one final dinner in the hotel this evening and will have the chance to think back over all that you have seen and done.
Day 7 Departure
Today you must head home and so you will bid farewell to Kittila and transfer to the airport for your flight home.

A fantastic family holiday... 27 February 2015 by Beverley Taylor-Wade
A fantastic family holiday and great to have a free day at the end to choose what we wanted to do. The kids loved skiing at Levi ski resort.
Unspoilt by busy tourism 22 February 2015 by Hazel Taylor-Siddons
Just come back from a fantastic holiday based in Kittila - Northern Finland inside the Arctic Circle. It is a small town with one hotel, one main road and unspoilt by busy tourism. The staff and welcome at the hotel was warm and friendly even at midnight after driving up from Rovaniemi! The guide in our case Jussi (pronounced Yussi) was great - he looks after the group from breakfast, through your activities and into the evening. The rooms are simply furnished but warm with great, hot showers. The light in February is similar to UK so you can see during your activities unlike in December. The hotel kindly provides clothing as listed for your full visit so if you go out to see Northern Lights then you are still warm. Our one disappointment was not seeing an Aurora in full vision but you can’t blame anyone for that. Getting on to the activities - they were as described and made a great change from skiing resorts of central Europe. Snowmobiling along tracks direct from hotel to frozen lake, then on to icing fishing - glad my dinner didn’t depend on it. We tried cross-country skiing and snowshoe walking, a great way to see more of the local area as once you leave the main road you need these! The highlight was the day on the reindeer farm and husky ride. Waiting for huskies to be harnessed and then you are off with the dogs barking and running through the forest and out onto the frozen lake and Arctic wilderness beyond For our options on the last day many paid to go downhill skiing at Levi, while I chose horse riding and others shopping and walking. The food in the hotel was good and suitable for the trip, and we tried some tasty local dishes. My advice would be don’t go at Christmas but wait for a little more light to get the best from your stay, unless you need to see Santa!
We had a wonderful journey 29 April 2013 by Di Yu
We had a wonderful journey. Special thanks to Annabel, who introduced the package and helped greatly throughout the booking. Without her assistance, and professional service, this couldn't have happened. Special thanks also goes to Scotty, our local guide, who is skillful, caring. Most enjoyable activity: Diversity of the activities arranged for each day and tailored by the local guide for the whole family (parents with one son of 19 years old and a daughter of 11 years old). Every activity was enjoyable as each was tailored for a family, not an individual. Front line staff are brilliant. The staff in the small hotel in Kittila were also fantastic.
Loved the relaxed feel 28 February 2012 by Janet Ditte
The hotel isn't the Ritz - but we didn't expect that. I loved the relaxed feel of it - you didn't have to dress up, felt comfortable to walk around in joggers and jumper and even in your socks. Just what you want after a busy day!The hotel staff and guides were fantastic. Our guide Jaakko was absolutely fab - really looked after us and judged the group brilliantly. Plus, he clearly is very experienced and knowledgeable about Finland, Lapland and all the activities we did. If you had got lost in the wilderness with him, you'd be fine! The equipment provided was great. My husband and I didn't get cold and our daughter only got really cold once when out at night in -25c looking at the Northern Lights. If you get lucky and the Northern Lights are visible, you won't need to wander far from the hotel to see them, around a 10 minute walk to the river, which is great if you want to nip back to the hotel to warm up.All the activities we did were fab and efficiently organised and mostly started between 9.30am to 10.00am, so not too early either. I wouldn't describe my husband or I as fit, but we managed them without too much difficulty at all. We also went downhill skiing in Levi. The hotel provided free transfers and Jaakko organised a private ski lesson for us and told us how and where to hire all the equipment. It was all very straightforward and easy.On a practical note - there are 2 supermarkets within easy walking distance of the hotel. The S-Market, which we visited, had a good range of foods, including fruit etc in case you have children who don't take to some of the food. But we also found that you can get a couple of dishes in the hotel (at an extra cost), including burger and chips and pizza, which we did get a couple of times when we knew our daughter wasn't going to fancy what was on offer that evening. Usual sort of cereals and toast are available for breakfast and usually soups for lunch. We took some cereal bars with us for quick, easy snacks on the go. All in all a fab trip that we would highly recommend.
Your staff are your greatest asset 04 January 2011 by Elizabeth Johnston
Your staff are your greatest asset. Without exception they have been helpful, patient and extremely generous with their time. No matter whom I have had dealings with, and no matter how briefly, I always felt that our party was in safe hands. Thank you!
The whole experience was excellent 05 April 2010 by Linda Thomas
The whole experience was excellent, from my first enquiry to returning home! The service & information provided was faultless. Everybody involved in providing the holiday & activities were very personable, professional & informative. Without doubt the best holiday we have ever had! Truly magical, an experience of a lifetime, better than I could have ever imagined. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!!! For me the husky safari (was my favourite activity) as it's something I’ve always wanted to do. The rest of the family it was the snowmobiles, as it was exciting! Although we enjoyed all the activities & our guide Jaakko was fantastic, he was so informative & knowledgeable about so many things, a good cook too. We had excellent lunches, cooked on open fires! He added to our enjoyment & was always helpful & friendly. The best holiday ever!!! Everything was just as described in the brochure, all the information and discussions I had on the telephone before booking was excellent & very helpful. The whole experience was a pleasure and your staff were very helpful, we would definitely book with you again and recommend you to friends. I have not stopped telling everyone about how fabulous it was since we came home.
Husky dog safari was absolutely out of this world 04 January 2010 by Julie Andrews
The husky dog safari was absolutely out of this world. Driving my own team of husky dogs along a frozen river was, for me, the highlight of the holiday. My teenage son loved driving the snowmobile. The bonfire, fireworks, champagne etc on New Year's eve was also most enjoyable. Really enjoyed mixing with the other holidaymakers in our group. Nice like-minded people - enjoyed having a big table for the 11 of us every evening. We all bonded very well. The quality of the suits, boots, mittens etc that were provided was excellent and certainly kept us warm in temperatures of -20°C. The activity guide Jaacko, who took care of us all week, was excellent. The optional day of skiing at Levi was good and the rep arranged the transport for us, which was appreciated.
