Over the years, our Pick and Mix at Luosto has become hugely popular with our guests, attracting families of all ages. This is in part due to the wonderful hospitable atmosphere of the hotel and the diverse range of activities on offer, which makes full use of the winter landscape. Furthermore, Luosto, with its forested-fell backdrop and location deep within Aurora territory, offers guests a picturesque winter wilderness and a high chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

The beauty of our Pick and Mix option for families is that, subject to availability, you can tailor it to individually suit your needs. Trips are based on a minimum of three nights, but extra nights can be added if you require. Activities can then be added to your trip from the hotel’s weekly timetable, as many or as few as you want, depending on your family’s requirements. You can choose your departure date, holiday duration, accommodation type and pace – creating your own ideal break.

The standard holiday price includes return flights, transfers, half board and cold weather clothing for the duration of your stay. Your accommodation at the Luosto Tunturi will be in double or twin rooms with access to the swimming pool and all your meals will be served in the restaurant here.

For families, there is a wide range of activities to choose from (for the minimum ages for the various excursions please see the timetable), including husky sledding, snowmobiling, reindeer encounters, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. There’s also a selection of downhill ski slopes close to the hotel and many families like to leave some time free to take to the slopes as equipment can be hired locally.

Agenda

Our Design Your Own programmes allow you to tailor your own holiday. Simply decide when you want to travel and for how long (a minimum stay of three nights is required) then match your stay to the activities available. Please note that all accommodation and activities are subject to availability at the time of booking.

Please note: Activity schedules are subject to change. Duration of activity includes transfer times and breaks, and all distances are approximate. Some activities require a minimum number of participants to operate and are subject to availability.

Every member of your party, who books 5 or more activities in advance, will receive a 5% discount on the price of their activities. Please note: This excludes cross-country ski, downhill ski and snowshoe hire and all activities must be booked as part of the same package. The discount will not apply to any activities booked locally.

Included in the price:

Flights, transfers, half board and cold weather clothing for the duration of your stay. Child prices are available for most activities, please contact one of our travel experts for details and a full quotation.

Husky safaris: All decisions are made on the day of the safari by the lead guide as to any guest’s suitability to drive their own sledge. As a general rule, those aged 15 and over are normally able to drive their own team of huskies but the guide’s decision on the day will be final. On certain safaris, children under the age of 15 will either travel in a sledge driven by the guide or an accompanying adult.

Snowmobile safaris: Snowmobile drivers must be 18 years old and hold a valid driving licence. Children under the age of 15 will travel in a sleigh pulled by the guide's snowmobile. If a child is taller than 140cm then they can ride as a passenger on the snowmobile when paying the full adult price. Please request this at the time of booking if you would like a child to ride as pillion.

Single snowmobiles: All snowmobile safaris are based on two people sharing. If this is not possible in your party then the single snowmobile supplement will be automatically applicable.

We include more, no hidden costs

On each of our holidays you will see a clear outline of exactly what's included in the price of your holiday. We never use 'headline' or 'lead-in' prices like so many tour operators, as we prefer to include as much as we can, rather than see our clients incur considerable additional costs in our destinations.
Price guarantee

Holiday group size (approximate)

Minimum group size of 2 people - during activities the maximum group size is approximately 28 people (approximately)

Group size

We always try to provide an approximation of the group size you can expect to be with for the duration of each of our holidays. It may be that you are joined by others for parts of your holiday (such as transfers and particular activities) but the above number reflects those you can normally expect to be with from beginning to end. If group size is something which is particularly important to you, please speak to our Travel Experts and they can suggest the best holidays for you.

Tailor-made holiday group sizes will vary for all activities as will the group size for any additional activities you book.

Minimum numbers required for a holiday to operate

Some of our holidays require a minimum number of participants to operate (as listed in the ‘Group Size’ section). If your holiday departure has not yet reached the minimum number, you will be told at the time of booking. In the unlikely event that your chosen date is not guaranteed by nine weeks before your scheduled departure date, we will contact you to discuss the available options as per our booking conditions.

Itinerary amendments

The order of activities is always subject to change and you will be provided with your final itinerary upon arrival at your destination.

Single supplement

Please note that some of our holidays may incur a single supplement. Please speak to one of our Travel Experts who will provide you with a quotation.

Medical history and advice

We want our holidays to be accessible as they can be and will do our best to accommodate any special requests and requirements where possible. We have a wide range of holidays and destinations and so our travel experts will help find the best holiday for you.

In order to give us the best possible chance to do this we ask that if you or any member of your party has any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday or has any special requirements, that you tell us at the time of enquiry or booking. You must also promptly advise us if any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday develops after your booking has been confirmed. You may need to provide a doctor’s note and proof of insurance in some cases as the health and safety of our clients is absolutely paramount.

In providing this information you are allowing us to work with our expert local partners to ensure that your whole party can enjoy the holiday. By letting us know in advance we can discreetly work with you to adapt any part of the holiday which may potentially be challenging. Being able to prepare for this in advance makes an incredible difference to what we can offer and minimises any impact on your party and the rest of the group.

Unfortunately, if you choose not to share this information with us in advance then it may limit some or all of the itinerary you have booked, and we cannot be held accountable for any additional costs or missed activities resulting from this.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant at the time of booking your holiday or you discover you are pregnant prior to your departure, firstly – congratulations! Secondly – please tell us as soon as possible. This situation does arise, and we are able to advise you both from our own first-hand experience and from discussing this at length with our expert local partners who have experience in this area. The more notice you can give us the better, in order to suggest any adaptions to the itinerary you have booked which will reduce the risk to both mother and baby. Please contact our customer service team at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information.

Insurance

Insurance is not included in your holiday, but it is a pre-requisite to travelling with us. You will need to ensure that you have cover for all the activities that you will be participating in during your holiday.

It is extremely important that you take out a suitable travel insurance policy at the time of booking. Plans do sometimes change, and you will need this policy should you need to cancel your holiday.

If you are struggling to find a suitable policy then details of our preferred provider, who will cover you for all the activities we offer, can be found on our website by clicking here. Please note that this policy is available to EU residents under the age of 75 only.

Reduced mobility

If you have a reduced level of mobility, then please contact our travel experts to discuss the suitability of this holiday in relation to your requirements.

Experience and fitness

Most of the activities we offer have been designed for beginners who have no prior experience and are of all age ranges and fitness levels. Our guides provide expert advice, tuition and instructions prior to any activity going ahead. Activities are designed to be enjoyed and not endured, but some, do require a more basic level of fitness than others. If you have any questions, then please contact one of our Travel Experts who can provide first-hand advice.

The only holidays which are not as suitable for complete beginners are the multi-night safaris which involve several days in wilderness cabins travelling by either snowmobile or husky safari. Again, this all depends on the individual taking part, but some prior experience and understanding of these types of activities can be very helpful and a greater level of fitness is recommended.

Guides & Safety

When partaking in any activity, it is imperative that everyone in your group listens very closely to the instructions provided by the guide and that they are abided by at all times. Our guides are experts in their field and no one knows the environment better than these highly knowledgeable and experienced providers.

Prior to starting any activity, please make it clear to your guide if there is any element of the safety briefing you are unsure of or would like to clarify before you set off.

Our guides will always take local conditions into account when considering whether an activity can go ahead. This is, in part, why your itinerary is subject to change at short notice. This rarely happens, however, if it does, we will always endeavour to reschedule the activity for later in your holiday. If this is not possible then the cost of the activity will be refunded to you when you return home.

Our guides' word on activities is always final and your safety is their principal concern at all times; please respect their decisions. By following their instructions, your safety and enjoyment during each activity will be greatly enhanced.

NB: In order to participate in our holidays, all guests must be able to understand instructions given in English. These instructions may be delivered verbally or in writing and will include vital safety information and ongoing instruction during activities.

Minimum and Maximum Age

The minimum age for this holiday can be found in the ‘Key Facts’ section of the holiday overview.

Younger family members may be able to participate but may not be able to take part in all activities. Please contact one of our Travel Experts if you have any questions.

Booking activities locally and equipment hire

Additional activities can be booked locally in almost all our destinations. However, as per our booking conditions, we cannot be held responsible for any injury or loss incurred through participation in activities which are booked at your destination outside of our holiday itinerary (see our ‘Terms and Conditions’ for further details).

When arranging any such activity please always ensure that safety is your primary concern.

In some of our destinations, you can borrow or hire equipment for use in your free time. You do so entirely at your own risk. You must ensure that you are properly prepared, have the necessary equipment and knowledge (maps, etc) and ensure that where applicable, you follow marked routes. We recommend discussing your plans with the local teams who will be able to advise on the most suitable options for you.

Always let the reception/guide know where you are planning to go and take a torch and mobile phone (with the hotel/guide’s phone number stored). It is also a good idea to leave your contact number and the time you expect to return to the hotel should the hotel need to contact you.

Car hire

If your trip includes car hire the named driver must have a credit card registered in their name which they can present when they collect their car along with their driving licence, as a deposit will be held on the credit card.  Please see your trip dossier for full details.

Travel Safety and Foreign Office Advice

Our clients’ safety is at the centre of everything we do, and our operations team continually assesses and monitors the destinations we feature. We carry out thorough risk assessments and work closely with all of our suppliers to continually follow best practice. For up to date travel advice the UK government offers its Travel Aware website as well as the advice detailed below.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Advice

We receive all updates from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with regards to travel advice and we always ensure that we follow this advice in our operations. The FCO issues travel advisories for countries based on a very wide range of factors. They may provide notification about things as simple as a football match and crowds, or they may go so far as to advise against all travel to a region. We ask all our clients to refer to the relevant Travel Advice by Country for the destinations they are visiting in order to make an informed decision on the safety of the destination based on the details provided. It also provides vital information regarding entry requirements, embassy information, local laws and customs as well as specific safety and health. Guests should take responsibility for keeping themselves up to date with this advice. Please also ensure that, if you are transiting through another country, you have read the advice and meet the entry requirements for that destination too.

The FCO travel advice is applicable to British Passport Holders. Most governments will issue their own travel advice for a region and, if you are not a UK resident then you can find some helpful links below:

Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/ New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.safetravel.govt.nz/ Canadian Consular Affairs Bureau http://voyage.gc.ca/ The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english.html

If the FCO deems that there is an unacceptable level of risk for UK citizens then, together with the government, they may issue an advisory against all travel to a region or country. If such an advisory is published, then we will act accordingly, and this may require the cancellation, curtailment or amendment of a holiday itinerary. These decisions are made on the basis of ensuring our clients’ safety and will affect all clients on the holiday, regardless of their nationality.

If one of our local experts suggests an amendment due to a situation which develops locally then we may also take the decision to amend an itinerary appropriately.

If we have to cancel your holiday prior to departure you will be offered the option of an alternative trip (where any price difference will either be refunded to or covered by you) or a full refund of the monies paid.

If we have to curtail a holiday, then you will be refunded for any costs for the elements we have been unable to deliver, where we have been able to secure a refund from our suppliers. If we must reroute a holiday, then any basis for refund is determined on a case by case basis and dependent on whether the central holiday experience was provided or not.

Flight schedule changes and connecting transportation

On your documentation, we will confirm your flight schedule. Sometimes the flight number, routing and timings might change prior to your departure. If the change is classed as a significant change then we will contact you to discuss this. Please see our booking conditions for details.

Flight schedule changes can impact on your pre and post-holiday travel arrangements if these have been booked separately to your holiday. We strongly recommend that you do not book transport (such as trains or transfers), car parking or non-connecting flights to the departure point for your holiday until you have received your final confirmed travel times when your final travel documents are issued. We are not responsible for the effect of any schedule change on your pre or post travel arrangements. We strongly recommend that you do not purchase non-flexible or non-refundable tickets to avoid cancellation and penalty charges.

Booking your own flights - cancellation disclaimer

If you have chosen to book your own flights, then you will need to wait until we confirm to you that the holiday departure has met the minimum numbers required to run (if applicable to your chosen holiday). Once the holiday is guaranteed to run, you will be informed and you can then make your arrangements.

If transfers are included in your holiday, please ensure that any potential flights will be met by our standard transfers (speak to one of our Travel Experts for advice) otherwise private transfer supplements may be applicable. Once your flights are booked, please send us a copy of your detailed flight itinerary.

Please be aware that most tickets are non-refundable in the case of cancellation. For this reason, we strongly advise you check the rules of the ticket and check the limitations of your cancellation insurance before booking. We cannot be held liable, in the unlikely eventuality that we should be forced to cancel or amend your trip, for losses incurred relating to any flight booking you have made.

Children and snowmobiles

For safety reasons, children under the age of 16 will typically travel in a sledge pulled behind the guides’ snowmobile on any snowmobile tours. From approximately 15 years onwards, children may be allowed to ride pillion on the back of a parent’s snowmobile. The guide will make a decision on the day as to where each individual child shall travel, and this may depend on the child’s height and the guide’s confidence in their ability to travel safely as a pillion for the duration of any safari. The guide’s decisions are final.

The driver of a snowmobile must be 18 years or over and have a valid driving licence. If an adult is unable to share a snowmobile with either a child or another adult in their party, they will be required to pay a single snowmobile supplement as all prices are based on two people sharing.

  • This was the holiday of a lifetime for me and my family, celebrating two milestone birthdays. It exceeded all expectations in every respect. 13 February 2019 by Judith Adams & the Baker Family

This was the holiday of a lifetime for me and my family, celebrating two milestone birthdays. It exceeded all expectations in every respect. I enjoyed the snowmobile trips more than anything because I'd always wanted to ride a motorbike, and at my advancing years it was the closest I was going to get!! But all activities were brilliant...... including meal times!

  • The holiday was excellent from A to Z 12 February 2017 by The Kanellopoulou-Warman Family

The holiday was excellent from A to Z: from the pre-booking and info phase to our return to the UK. All activities were very enjoyable indeed as we tried almost everything. It would be very hard to distinguish: all members of the family thoroughly enjoyed the holiday and we were lucky enough to have the extra bonus of the Northern Lights during our night snowshoeing hiking. An unforgettable

experience! We will certainly be back to try some summer destinations too. My kids are now huge fans of activity holidays! Kiitos to the UK team and your local rep, Greta! She was a great help esp. when we arrived and 2/4 suitcases were left at Heathrow. She made sure we had the essentials for the night. Our suitcases arrived the following morning right on time for our first activities so all ended well.

  • Winter wonderland experience 12 December 2016 by Joseph Lau

My family and I took up the Luosto mix and match vacation plan with added days as it offered the most flexibility in terms of options for activities and personal service. We went between 12-17 December 2016 and pretty much left everything to Activities Abroad to organise, which they did beautifully. queries from our side. Our on-site Activities Abroad representative Greta was great in detailing our itinerary and helping us get fitted for our winter gear, as well as seeking us out daily to check on us; but also she knew we didn't need hand holding so left us alone as well. My family loved all the activities (have to recommend the huskies and reindeer safaris), and the location is absolutely beautiful, with snow aplenty. Luosto is a tiny village so always felt isolated and quiet (though we were visiting early season), and is easy to walk and navigate. The ski slopes were so quiet that we virtually had the slopes to ourselves, but were told that they do get busier after the New Year. Unfortunately, the weather did not facilitate any Aurora viewing during our visit, but that was only a minor downside to our winter wonderland experience and we would highly recommend Activities Abroad to any other potential snow seekers.

  • We felt very welcome and well taken care of 27 February 2015 by Christine Valvatne

The snowmobile safari got the top rating from the whole family. We had very good guides, and a great time. Very friendly staff at the hotel and at Snow Games. We felt very welcome and well taken care of.

  • We would like to thank the Activities Abroad reps... 02 January 2015 by Regina Loh

We would like to thank the Activities Abroad reps, Karen and Graham who assisted us during our stay in Luosto. My niece celebrated her birthday there and Karen had, within short notice, made a cute gingerbread house which was to be her birthday cake. We really appreciated her kind gesture. They were kind enough to alert the hotel that we would be returning late from our activities on two

  • I cannot fault the experience in Luosto. 06 March 2014 by Alan Whall

I cannot fault the experience in Luosto. We took the family of six adults and three children 8 to 12 years old and it was a very special holiday. Even the aurora put on a spectacular show for us despite the fact that this winter has been unusually warm and damp (hence cloudy). We enjoyed the husky and snowmobile safaris. We skied and trekked on snowshoes and all in all every member of the group

found something to remember. We would like to thank Activities Abroad for a splendid family experience and for attentive and helpful service from your people. The hotel staff were excellent, especially as we had one very ill little boy for the first few days. In common with most Finnish people we met, they were very positive and ‘can-do’.

Your reps in Luosto, are absolutely brilliant. A warm welcome and gentle checks that everything was OK in the mornings and at the activities. They are genuinely committed to making sure that your guests have a great time.We booked a snow shoe hike and snowmobile/dog sleigh excursion with you, which both went really well. Snow games are excellent partners.I booked this trip to celebrate my wife's

  • We are all agreed we had a wonderful time! 26 March 2013 by Gerald Miles

This type of holiday, especially when a family is involved, is not cheap and therefore we are delighted that the overall experience was such a good one. We went to Northern Finland 5 years ago and did many of the same things but this trip was even better. Thank You.Most enjoyable : Seeing The Northern Lights ....two spectacular shows plus two other sightings in one week ! A lifetime ambition

fulfilled. We have some stunning photos. The Huskies, Reindeer, Snowmobile, Amethyst Mine, Snow Shoeing..... We also caught the bus into Pyha for a half day trip (nice little visitor centre) and walked around the Lake more times than we can remember -beautiful in the day and night time. We are all agreed we had a wonderful time! Thank you and well done to all concerned.

  • Your reps in Luosto are doing you proud... 11 March 2013 by Joanne Pinfield

Your reps in Luosto (Peter and Lorna Drew) are doing you proud. Extremely pleasant, cheerful and helpful. Food at the Hotel Tunturi was sometimes not the best (a lot of stews in strange sauces and disappointing desserts), but the buffet salads were lovely and we always had sufficient. The log cabin we had (Jutamaya 1) was delightful, but we were surprised at just how far away from everything we

were (a good 20/25 minute walk). Could have been clearer at time of booking, but we were very pleased to be there rather than the hotel, as the ability to chill and the open fires were great. We'd paid for inclusive hotel breakfast, but couldn't face the walk and ended up self-catering- we wouldn't have taken the hotel breakfast option if we'd realised how far away we were.We enjoyed all the activities- it's all so different from things you can normally do. If pushed, we'd go for the husky safari, as our eldest daughter (17) was able to drive the sleigh and absolutely loved it. Peaceful (once on the move!), stunning scenery, more snow than I've ever seen and the experience was great. The ice fishing was also good fun. A lovely sleigh ride to reach the river and then the excellent guide helped us all to catch a number of fish (I'd never caught a fish in my life before- not through lack of trying!). Also, the ski resort, although small, was excellent. We are all experienced, competent, skiers and really enjoyed our 2 days of skiing. The runs were well pisted, the snow was amazing and there were never any queues, so although the runs were limited, we had a great time. We all tried snowboarding and the ski school was excellent-empty slopes, patient, English speaking instructors. Our youngest is now hooked! There wasn't an activity we didn't enjoy. If pushed, the actual amethyst digging part of the mine visit felt very ‘commercial’, but the snowmobile ride there and the talk at the mine was interesting (and we found some nice little pieces). The only other small problem we encountered was that the girls got extremely cold on the back of the snowmobiles during the safari. Overall, though, there was nothing we didn't thoroughly enjoy. It’s great and I'd recommend it to any family (in fact, I already have done!). My only comment would be to make sure customers are aware how far out the log cabins are, as the distance could be a problem for some clients.

  • We really enjoyed everything we did 21 January 2013 by Margaret Mossman

5 of us (me and my husband plus our daughter, her partner and their 9month old son) have just returned from Luosto and have had a fabulous time. We chose a design your own activities holiday so that we could play in the snow in pairs, leaving someone always available to babysit, and the program worked very well. We really enjoyed everything we did. We had obviously been aware of how cold it would

be for baby so went prepared with lots of warm clothing for him, but the guides were able to find a suit small enough for him to wear so he was even able to enjoy the toboggan run with us! We chose to stay in the hotel where there was a pool, which we all enjoyed as a family and the staff were very accommodating of a young child.Thank you Activities Abroad for a wonderful week - but the icing on the cake you couldn't have arranged - the Northern Lights in all its glory!!!!!! WOW.

  • So memories to treasure for the rest of our life 02 January 2013 by Maria Woolley

The activities were great fun. We opted for snow mobile - was good fun to try, daughter was bit cold on back of it. The journey consisted of a ride for around 1 hour to Tepe for drinks/snacks and then ride back for around 1 hour again. The journey out was bit disappointing ... better on way back as you seemed to go more cross-country rather than straight line (which was more fun on the

snowmobile). The chap who took us out was great and very knowledgeable.Second trip was the ' night snow shoe in search of northern lights'. We were a bit worried about whether our daughter (12) would cope with this, but she was fine and enjoyed it. Our guide was 'Pascal' and he was fantastic .. really made the trip. He was extremely knowledgeable about the area, country and northern lights. Unfortunately it was too cloudy to see any lights but was still great fun.Third trip was 'night husky safari'. No problems with my daughter enjoying this one! Great fun - even if you’re just sitting in the sledge. As it had been snowing quite a bit that day the huskies needed a little help up the hills, so be warned – it’s not an easy ride! Afterwards we got to see the dogs and puppies (gorgeous) and warm up with hot drink and snack. Was a really great activity and well recommended. We also went skiing in the resort. I went skiing a long time ago and my daughter had never been, so we opted to have a skiing lesson. Was well worth it - 90 mins of tuition and we were well away. Although we didn't stay after this as it was very cold and tiring! Went back 2 days later and weather was warmer, so we managed nearly 3 hours. If you're a beginner skier the slopes are ideal, very quiet and plenty of areas to practise. My husband is more confident but like me hadn't been for a while, so he even felt some of the more difficult slopes were still challenging. The reps at the resort were second to none. Absolutely great! Very friendly and helpful.Overall we have had a fantastic holiday and so memories to treasure for the rest of our life. Many thanks.

  • We will be back next year 15 April 2012 by Fraser Skirrow

We had an excellent time on this trip, focused on skiing and snow shoeing in search of the Northern Lights. We had a little cross country ski experience but we booked two instruction sessions - one on the basics and then another one on more advanced ski skating. Once you have got over the local children passing you at speed while you struggle to get going, a few hours gets you into the swing and

  • A truly memorable holiday 20 February 2012 by Michelle Baker

Just returned from a fabulous holiday at the Luosto Tunturi. The family room worked really well for us. I was travelling on my own with two of my sons (ages 13 and 11) but found the hotel, and resort as a whole, a safe place to let them explore on their own. All the hotel staff were exceptionally polite, helpful and their standard of English very good. A special word of thanks and praise for Lorna

and Peter, the reps, who were on hand to advise and help in any way they could. All of the activities were all amazing! My favourite was the snowmobile trip to the amethyst mine, whilst my sons' favourites were the husky safari and ice fishing. We became ridiculously competitive over who could catch the most fish! The only activity which was less successful for us was the snowshoe trek in search of the Northern Lights. Our group only had my two children in it (the remainder being adults/late teens) and the pace was too fast for my youngest son. Other holidaymakers who did this trip on another night, where there were more children, did not have this problem. That being said , it was still an amazing experience. We were fantastically lucky in a week of heavy snowfall and almost continual cloud cover, that the sky cleared for a few hours on Wednesday night and the Northern Lights put on a magnificent show!! What more could anyone ask ? A truly memorable holiday.

  • Same high standards as last year! 30 December 2010 by Geoff Beresford

Same high standard as last year for the entire holiday. Improved this year by the addition of an in-resort rep. Thought Andy Leggo did a great job, keeping us all informed and providing a level of customer care that other tour ops could only dream of . Yes, only 20-ish people to look after for the week, but it does make a difference to the experience. Yet again, another successful holiday arranged
