A wealth of choice

Deep within the Arctic Circle at the top of Finnish Lapland, overlooking the waters of the Etuväylä River as it courses along the border with Sweden, is Harriniva. This family-managed holiday centre is a fine activity destination surrounded by pristine wilderness territory. To the east is Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, third largest in the country, filled with spectacular fells and still forests; prior to this, seemingly endless spaces of snow extend in all directions, ready for eager snowmobilers and cross country skiers to travel across them.

Much recommends Harriniva as the ideal place for your family activity holiday with Activities Abroad. For starters, you’ll be free to design your own itinerary from a rich selection of things to do!

Harriniva is particularly good for husky rides, having its own dogsledding centre. There’s an equally excellent choice of accommodation on offer here, including cosy ensuite rooms in Scandinavian style, some of which come with private saunas; simple wilderness cabins which let you break free of creature comforts; and secluded Northern Lights cabins for an extra-special stay on the riverside. You can also arrange to overnight at the Lainio Snow Village, sleeping inside its captivating walls of ice.

Assorted activities abroad

We can easily say that the variety of activities we have on offer definitely provides something for everyone, and the freedom to choose enables you to put your ideal holiday together with the very best of Nordic practices and pastimes. From experience, we’ve found that many of the activities are especially well-suited to older children and teenagers.

Given that people in these parts spend most of their lives surrounded by snow, they’ve devised all kinds of exciting ways to travel over it – all of which you’ll be able to try for yourselves.

Trek through the wilderness on snowshoes or pick up the speed and blast about on snowmobiles. Do either during the day and you will take in some truly wondrous natural sights; both are also very enjoyable means of following the Northern Lights at night. You might prefer to learn the more physical art of cross-country skiing, which is tremendous fun!

Most popular of all has to be dogsledding: a traditional means of getting about which goes back generations. You can cover distances from nine to fifty kilometres in length – whichever you choose, you’ll certainly be in for a thrilling ride!

You’ll also have the opportunity to throw in a bit of native culture. How about ice-fishing like the locals on a frozen lake, or learning about the lifestyle of the indigenous Sami people? The decision is all yours!

Whether you’re thundering over the whiteness on a snowmobile or patiently waiting by a hole in the ice for a fish to bite, you’ll be guaranteed stupendous views in the pleasant Finnish air. We’re a bit obsessed with husky rides in the Activities Abroad office and would recommend them to you without any hesitation whatsoever. It’s also well-worth finding out about Sami culture which has long made its mark on this country and is tied to its past. Of course, you definitely shouldn’t miss looking for the Northern Lights: Nature’s very own show, which make any modern special effects look completely outdated!
