Trips to Sweden
Inland and island locations
Experience an active family adventure in Swedish Lapland! We travel everywhere from undisturbed wilderness deep in the western stretch of Swedish Lapland, all the way to the frozen Luleå Archipelago, which has over 1,300 islands in the eastern Bay of Bothnia.
Overlooking the Luleå Archipelago is Brändön Lodge, where many of our trips take place. Brändön is perfect for families, with a welcoming lodge for meals and social time, as well as individual winter cottages to enjoy for the duration of your stay. Activity sites are near at hand too: here you can take a thrilling ride on the sea ice and explore the surrounding pine forests and outdoor trails on snowshoes.
The land northwest is dotted with pretty bodies of water which make excellent locations for a bit of ice-fishing – such as at Sörbyn, by the lovely Lake Vitträsket. Thanks to the natural backdrop, there are also opportunities to spot local animals like wandering moose and reindeer.Read more
Sitting in a remote whiteness, further into this region, is Fjellborg. Meet a family who have lived here for generations and are the proud owners of around 100 Alaskan huskies! This holiday is the perfect adventure for older children as you all travel by dogsled for two and a half days. Glide across frozen lakes and between snow-topped trees during the day; sleep in a simple wilderness cabin by night.
Whether in the quiet west or the coastal east, your Activities Abroad holiday to Sweden will take you well away from crowded resorts, all the way to hidden playgrounds at the top of the country.
Unique activities in unique locations
Ever wanted to travel on a hovercraft? You can at Brändön Lodge! Each of our holidays there features a guided hovercraft tour of the Luleå Archipelago, with a seasoned pilot at the helm. You’ll get a closer look at the Arctic fauna and flora as you head across the sea ice to a remote village. On the mainland, fans of exploring will definitely enjoy the winter skills sessions. Led by an expert, you make a snowshoe trip into the local forests, pick out hoof prints, learn how to build a fire, and prepare hot drinks – all around a campfire. For more animal experiences, you can go on wild moose safaris and head to a reindeer farm.Read more
Those seeking to further feed their need for speed will love snowmobiling or shooting about on toboggans and kicksleds. Additional entertainment comes with dogsledding, available on every one of our Swedish trips. Children easily make friends with the huskies, and the rousing ride takes you through the most spectacular wintery scenery. If this sounds like something your family would like to experience further then take a look at our Fjellborg trip, which is specifically focused on dog sledding. It ends with a visit to the Icehotel, an extraordinary frozen structure with amazing sculptures inside. Built from scratch in a totally different design each winter, it melts back into the rivers and lakes come spring. Similarly, it is possible on other holidays to see the acclaimed Treehotel and its futuristic rooms, including one shaped like a UFO and another like a bird’s nest – an exceptional family destination.
From forest floors and treetops to frozen lakes and an Icehotel, our family activities holidays in Sweden cover all types of environments – you certainly won’t be lacking in choice!
Explore Sweden together
As far as family locations go, Brändön is one of the best. The lodge and its winter cottages are like homes away from home, allowing for quality time together. You don’t have to voyage out of your way to get to activities, as everything starts close by. Touring the Luleå Archipelago by hovercraft makes everyone feel like explorers in a sci-fi film, and the wildlife-spotting is particularly good fun.
The Swedish wonderland of lakes is rather special, and ice-fishing on them is a real treat. This is often a completely new experience for families, but don’t be daunted!Read more
Our local guides can do this with their eyes closed and will walk you through the different techniques. Even if you don’t make a catch, having the chance to participate in this traditional Nordic pursuit is something you will always remember.
Regardless of destination, we can never recommend husky rides enough. Popular with every age group, they are the jewel of the winter activity crown, so to speak: dogs and riders connect, while hearts and minds race. To stay in the wilderness cabins as part of our Fjellborg holiday adds a genuine outdoors element to this, melting the boundaries between your family and the natural world.
