The saying ‘Good things come in small packages’ was practically created for Costa Rica.
Despite covering less than 0.05% of the world’s landmass, this wonderful country offers a staggering variety of landscapes: pristine coastline, rainforest, cloud forest, mountain ranges, wetlands, and other aquatic habitats. Another huge attraction of Costa Rica is, of course, the incredible variety of fauna and flora, with some five per cent of the world’s biodiversity, found within its borders.
Our active holiday itinerary has been crafted to ensure that your family gets to enjoy as many of these natural wonders as possible in an active and fun-filled way. During our adventure holiday you will canyon and raft through the jungle, paddle-board at the foot of a volcano, fly through the treetops, and boat through incredible rainforest canals – all activities are included in the cost of the holiday. One of the advantages of the country’s small size is that there are no arduous days full of travel or internal flights in order to enjoy them, as everything is within a manageable distance.
A key highlight of any family holiday to Costa Rica is the fact that you will meet some of the friendliest people on the planet. It has frequently been ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world – from our experience, we can safely say that this is completely true! Studies have determined that locals have the highest level of life satisfaction on Earth. When we asked our friends in Costa Rica if they agreed, they simply replied, “Look around you, who wouldn’t be happy here?”
They couldn’t be more right!

Day 1 Arrival and Transfers
You will be greeted at San Jose Airport to complete the short transfer to your hotel. En route you will be briefed about the following day’s activities and in the evening, you are free to relax and enjoy your new surroundings and the hotel's wonderful facilities.
Included Meals: None -
Day 2 Waterfalls, Volcanoes and Butterflies: Poaz and La Paz
After breakfast at the hotel, you will get straight down to business. Your guide will meet you at the hotel and give you an overview of the exciting day ahead before you all head to the Poas Volcano National Park. The park is home to the active Poas Volcano, cloud forest and crater lakes, so there are lots of natural spectacles to be enjoyed here and it offers an excellent introduction to Costa Rica’s diverse natural world.
Next on the itinerary is a trip to La Paz Waterfall Gardens. This incredible area is a nature park and wildlife refuge, and also features some of the most famous waterfalls in Costa Rica. You will walk a 3km trail to see four of these majestic waterfalls, stopping at amazing viewpoints along the way to admire the forest. There’s also a hummingbird garden, serpentarium, frog pond, small aquarium and large enclosed butterfly observatory.
Back at the hotel, you will need to repack for the next part of your journey as there is a 25lb luggage (11kg) restriction for your boat transfer tomorrow. Your luggage will be securely stored with your guide and given back to you on Day 5.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch -
Day 3 Tortuguero by Boat
Today’s early start will be well rewarded and you will enjoy a traditional Costa Rican breakfast en route. Your destination is the dock, where you meet your boat for the transfer into the Tortuguero National Park (approximately three hours transfer in total including the boat trip).
Along the route, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife and plant life that call this home. Tortuguero is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world, offering a huge range of animals and environments to enjoy.
After lunch at your lodge, you will walk to the local town and visit a conservation centre in order to learn about the lush tropical environment in which you now find yourselves. There will also be some free time to explore or relax around the swimming pool.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner -
Day 4 Turtles in Tortuga
After spending a morning exploring the dreamy village of Tortuguero, you will travel to the Sea Turtle Conservancy Museum and learn how conservationists are stopping the ‘turtle catchers’ who make up the village’s name. In this small museum and conservation centre, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the different species of sea turtles that nest and lay their eggs on the beaches of Tortuguero, stopping for lunch before having the rest of the afternoon to explore these magical beaches at your own pace.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner -
Day 5 Torturego to Sarapiqui
This morning you will leave your lodge by boat, before travelling inland to the wonderful and lush green scenery of Sarapiquí and your Rainforest camp.
You will stop for lunch en route at a local restaurant and will arrive at your new temporary home at around 3 pm. The afternoon will be free to relax before dinner is served in the main communal tents and you will have a chance to take in your incredible jungle surroundings.
You can fall asleep in your well-equipped tented suite on the edge of the forest, listening to the sounds of nature all around you.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Dinner -
Day 6 Sunrise and Moonlight Nature Tours
After a day of rest, today's adventurous trips form a day of two halves.
In the morning, you will accompany guides for a hiking tour in Selva Verde Private Reserve, experiencing first-hand the wonder of exploring a tropical rainforest. Enjoy a personalised and leisurely ramble through Selva Verde's 500-acre private reserve with our knowledgeable naturalist guides, who can answer any questions you might have about your remarkable surroundings.
After lunch, the afternoon is yours to do with as you wish, but we would suggest resting ahead of the evening’s endeavours. A guided night tour, which will allow you to seek nocturnal animals such as the three-toed anteater, Geoffroy's spider monkey and ocelot, is best undertaken with enough energy to drink in every astonishing minute. Hearing the trees echo with the cries of howler monkeys and having an expert on hand to ask questions about any creatures you may encounter will make memories for a lifetime and is the best way to spend a late night.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner -
Day 7 Culture, Coffee and Chocolate
Understandably tired from all the exciting activity of your late night? Grab a coffee and keep your strength up.
During the coffee tour you will learn the whole life cycle of the Coffea arabica plant, which grows from carefully selected seeds to the all-important green coffee beans which are roasted to constitute our favourite beverage. As the Cruz family has been growing coffee on the island since they arrived in 1937, they are sure to have a few tricks of the trade.
Once the coffee tour is finished you will move on to the accompanying chocolate tour, where you will have the opportunity to taste several types of products. You may even be selected to grind your own cocoa beans, which will then be used to make a chocolate bar for you to take home.
As well as sampling the local produce, after lunch a guided tour will walk you around the breath-taking grounds of the plantation, explaining the history of both the Cruz family and the area. Upon returning to La Fortuna, the rest of the day is yours to do with as you wish.
Included Meals: Breakfast -
Day 8 Arial Adventures in Sky Park Areal
This morning you will transfer into the shadow of the impressive and active Arenal Volcano for a guided hike (transfer around three hours). The degree of activity from the volcano varies, but at its most active there can be magnificent displays of flowing red-hot lava and incandescent rocks flying through the air.
You will visit one of the most important eco-tourism developments in the whole of the country, the Arenal Hanging Bridges. The 16 bridges are suspended within this primary rainforest and vary in length between 8 and 98 metres. The bridges allow you to get a totally different perspective on the forest, viewing the flora and fauna at close quarters as you explore this private reserve.
This afternoon you will head to the small town of La Fortuna and visit the impressive La Fortuna waterfall. Splendour at the beauty of nature from the ground as water cascades a staggering 70ft from above.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch -
Day 9 Surf and Turf
Following breakfast, you’ll try stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on the stunningly blue Lake Arenal. Admire the volcanic mountain range backdrop as you stand on top of your board and use your paddle to glide across the water.
After paddleboarding, you will explore more of Costa Rica’s landscape during a visit to Tenorio Volcano National Park. The park is filled with many natural wonders but perhaps the most impressive is the Celeste River. The river gets its spectacular colour from the sulphur that is emitted by the volcanic activity and it’s amazing to see how the turquoise hue contrasts with the green surrounding forests. During the course of your afternoon hike, you will also see the four cones of the Tenorio Volcano which lends the park its name.
Lunch is provided today and once you have explored the National Park; you will be transferred to your hotel which sits amongst brilliant rainforest surroundings.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch -
Day 10 Wild White Waters: Rafting and Waterfalls in Rincon Corobici
Today you will take on a river rafting adventure down the Tenorio River. After breakfast, you will be transferred to meet your expert river guides and will be provided with a safety talk and all the gear you need. Please note, children must be 9 years and over to take part.
You will work as a team to conquer the class III and IV rapids as you manoeuvre your way down the powerful river.
After your epic adventure on the water, you will enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant on the banks of the Corobici River, before making one last exciting stop on the way to your hotel.
A mere ten-minute walk from the main road lies Llanos del Cortez Waterfall, a strikingly beautiful natural feature with a sandy shore on the side. So many locals swim in the plunge pool beneath it that a permanent lifeguard is situated onsite, and unlike other waterfalls in Costa Rica, Llanos del Cortez is known for being easily accessible for all ages due to the concrete slope leading down to the shore.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch -
Day 11 - 13 Lie Back, Relax and Enjoy
The last days of your holiday are free to relax at your luxury hotel and enjoy this beautiful area following your active adventures. If you want to arrange additional activities, then these can be arranged and paid for locally. Alternatively, simply enjoy the hotel swimming pool and postcard-perfect beaches.

The Specifics
Holiday group size (approximate)
Minimum 2 people and maximum 20 (approximately)
Group Size
We always try to provide an approximation of the group size you can expect to be with for the duration of each of our holidays. It may be that you are joined by others for parts of your holiday (such as transfers and particular activities) but the above number reflects those you can normally expect to be with from beginning to end. If group size is something which is particularly important to you, please speak to our Travel Experts and they can suggest the best holidays for you.
Tailor-made holiday group sizes will vary for all activities as will the group size for any additional activities you book.
Minimum numbers required for a holiday to operate
Some of our holidays require a minimum number of participants to operate (as listed in the ‘Group Size’ section). If your holiday departure has not yet reached the minimum number, you will be told at the time of booking. In the unlikely event that your chosen date is not guaranteed by nine weeks before your scheduled departure date, we will contact you to discuss the available options as per our booking conditions.
Minimum and maximum age
The minimum age for this holiday can be found in the ‘Key Facts’ section of the holiday overview.
Younger family members may be able to participate but may not be able to take part in all activities. Please contact one of our Travel Experts if you have any questions.
Itinerary amendments
The order of activities listed in this agenda is provided for guidance only, your final and detailed itinerary will be provided either with your final travel documents (which are uploaded into your online account around a week prior to departure) or upon arrival.
Medical History and Advice
We want our holidays to be accessible as they can be and will do our best to accommodate any special requests and requirements where possible. We have a wide range of holidays and destinations and so our travel experts will help find the best holiday for you.
In order to give us the best possible chance to do this we ask that if you or any member of your party has any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday or has any special requirements, that you tell us at the time of enquiry or booking. You must also promptly advise us if any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday develops after your booking has been confirmed. You may need to provide a doctor’s note and proof of insurance in some cases as the health and safety of our clients is absolutely paramount.
In providing this information you are allowing us to work with our expert local partners to ensure that your whole party can enjoy the holiday. By letting us know in advance we can discreetly work with you to adapt any part of the holiday which may potentially be challenging. Being able to prepare for this in advance makes an incredible difference to what we can offer and minimises any impact on your party and the rest of the group.
Unfortunately, if you choose not to share this information with us in advance then it may limit some or all of the itinerary you have booked, and we cannot be held accountable for any additional costs or missed activities resulting from this.
It is vitally important that you advise us prior to departure of any medical or dietary condition relating to any member of your party so that we may notify our local staff before you arrive. We recommend only drinking bottled water from bottles with unbroken seals and be vigilant about the use of ice in drinks and ice cream.
Insurance
Insurance is not included in your holiday, but it is a pre-requisite to travelling with us. You will need to ensure that you have cover for all the activities that you will be participating in during your holiday.
It is extremely important that you take out a suitable travel insurance policy at the time of booking. Plans do sometimes change, and you will need this policy should you need to cancel your holiday.
If you are struggling to find a suitable policy then details of our preferred provider, who will cover you for all the activities we offer, can be found on our website by clicking here. Please note that this policy is available to EU residents under the age of 75 only.
The UK Foreign Office Advice
Our clients’ safety is at the centre of everything we do, and our operations team continually assesses and monitors the destinations we feature. We carry out thorough risk assessments and work closely with all of our suppliers to continually follow best practice. For up to date travel advice the UK government offers its Travel Aware website as well as the advice detailed below.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Advice
We receive all updates from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with regards to travel advice and we always ensure that we follow this advice in our operations. The FCO issues travel advisories for countries based on a very wide range of factors. They may provide notification about things as simple as a football match and crowds, or they may go so far as to advise against all travel to a region. We ask all our clients to refer to the relevant Travel Advice by Country for the destinations they are visiting in order to make an informed decision on the safety of the destination based on the details provided. It also provides vital information regarding entry requirements, embassy information, local laws and customs as well as specific safety and health. Guests should take responsibility for keeping themselves up to date with this advice. Please also ensure that, if you are transiting through another country, you have read the advice and meet the entry requirements for that destination too.
The FCO travel advice is applicable to British Passport Holders. Most governments will issue their own travel advice for a region and, if you are not a UK resident then you can find some helpful links below:
Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/
New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.safetravel.govt.nz/
Canadian Consular Affairs Bureau http://voyage.gc.ca/
The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english.html
If the FCO deems that there is an unacceptable level of risk for UK citizens then, together with the government, they may issue an advisory against all travel to a region or country. If such an advisory is published, then we will act accordingly, and this may require the cancellation, curtailment or amendment of a holiday itinerary. These decisions are made on the basis of ensuring our clients’ safety and will affect all clients on the holiday, regardless of their nationality.
If one of our local experts suggests an amendment due to a situation which develops locally then we may also take the decision to amend an itinerary appropriately.
If we have to cancel your holiday prior to departure you will be offered the option of an alternative trip (where any price difference will either be refunded to or covered by you) or a full refund of the monies paid.
If we have to curtail a holiday, then you will be refunded for any costs for the elements we have been unable to deliver, where we have been able to secure a refund from our suppliers. If we must reroute a holiday, then any basis for refund is determined on a case by case basis and dependent on whether the central holiday experience was provided or not.
Booking activities locally
Additional activities can be booked locally in almost all our destinations. However, as per our booking conditions, we cannot be held responsible for any injury or loss incurred through participation in activities which are booked at your destination outside of our holiday itinerary (see our ‘Terms and Conditions’ for further details).
When arranging any such activity please always ensure that safety is your primary concern.
In some of our destinations, you can borrow or hire equipment for use in your free time. You do so entirely at your own risk. You must ensure that you are correctly prepared, have the necessary equipment and knowledge (maps, etc.) and ensure that where applicable, you follow marked routes. We recommend discussing your plans with the local teams who will be able to advise on the most suitable options for you.
Always let the reception/guide know where you are planning to go and take a torch and mobile phone (with the hotel/guide’s phone number stored). It is also a good idea to leave your contact number and the time you expect to return to the hotel should the hotel need to contact you.
Flight schedule changes and connecting transportation
On your documentation, we will confirm your flight schedule. Sometimes the flight number, routing and timings might change prior to your departure. If the change is classed as a significant change then we will contact you to discuss this. Please see our booking conditions for details.
Flight schedule changes can impact on your pre and post-holiday travel arrangements if these have been booked separately to your holiday. We strongly recommend that you do not book transport (such as trains or transfers), car parking or non-connecting flights to the departure point for your holiday until you have received your final confirmed travel times when your final travel documents are issued. We are not responsible for the effect of any schedule change on your pre or post travel arrangements. We strongly recommend that you do not purchase non-flexible or non-refundable tickets to avoid cancellation and penalty charges.
Booking your own flights cancellation disclaimer
If you have chosen to book your own flights, then you will need to wait until we confirm to you that the holiday departure has met the minimum numbers required to run (if applicable to your chosen holiday). Once the holiday is guaranteed to run, you will be informed and you can then make your arrangements.
If transfers are included in your holiday, please ensure that any potential flights will be met by our standard transfers (speak to one of our Travel Experts for advice) otherwise private transfer supplements may be applicable. Once your flights are booked, please send us a copy of your detailed flight itinerary.
Please be aware that most tickets are non-refundable in the case of cancellation. For this reason, we strongly advise you check the rules of the ticket and check the limitations of your cancellation insurance before booking. We cannot be held liable, in the unlikely eventuality that we should be forced to cancel or amend your trip, for losses incurred relating to any flight booking you have made.

The holiday overall worked perfectly. 21 July 2018 by The White Family
The holiday overall worked perfectly. The transfers all arrived on time. All the guides were knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. There was a good range of activities to suit both of us as they covered both wildlife spotting and more sporty activities such as the zip lining, white water rafting, canyoning etc. The accommodation at all places was great, as was the food. I think the lodge at…
Read more Tortuguero (that was changed at the last minute) was in an excellent spot as was next to the canals and the beach. Also, the hotel at Arenal that was also changed) was brilliant. It was in beautiful surroundings and we all enjoyed the hot spring pools. It was also good having the few final days at the beach hotel with no activities as this gave us a chance to relax after a lot of early starts and travelling. Overall it was an amazing trip and everything I hoped for. Just a shame it's over!
