Our Taster Week title is fairly self-explanatory. This holiday gives you a sample of all of the key winter activities available in Lapland whilst including some free time in which to take advantage of the downhill ski slopes or additional activities available.
You will enjoy mainly half-day activities which include a thrilling snowmobiling trip, dog sledding with a team of eager huskies, ice fishing over frozen lakes, cross-country skiing across the snow and some close encounters with the enchanting reindeer of Finnish Lapland. These activities have been designed to showcase the beautiful wilderness scenery of Lapland and allow you to enjoy some memorable and unique experiences.Read more
Luosto is also renowned as a Northern Lights destination and so we include an Aurora snowshoe hike so you can take part in a family hunt for the Aurora.
As a small ski resort, Luosto is perfectly suited to this style of holiday as there are excellent facilities. The downhill slopes are a real favourite for families and the swimming pool at the Tunturi Hotel is always a popular choice too. A range of additional activities can be booked locally so that you can tailor your holiday should you wish.
If you are lucky enough to be visiting Luosto during the Christmas or New Year period then there will be some really special evening meals provided by the hotel for your family to enjoy. At New Year there will also be fireworks around the village so we recommend doing what the locals normally do and getting wrapped up warm and seeing in the New Year together as a family in a stunning Lappish location!

Day 1 Flights, arrivals and introduction
Your family will be welcomed on arrival before being transferred to your accommodation at the Luosto Tunturi Hotel. Upon arrival you will be briefed on the week ahead and provided with your cold weather clothing. Dinner will then be served in the hotel restaurant.
Before bed you may want to take a walk to the frozen lake behind the hotel as this is a prime spot should the Northern Lights be visible.
Day 2 Ice fishing
You will have some free time this morning to try out the pool or explore. The village is home to a handful of small souvenir shops and everything is within easy walking distance. There are also some delightful short walks very close to the hotel.
In the afternoon you will be taken in a snowmobile-drawn sled to a local ice fishing spot. Your guide will give you a few hints and tips; you will drill through the ice and drop your line. Then it’s simply a case of waiting for the fish to bite. The excitement builds as you await a nibble from the water below. Regardless of whether you land a catch, this is delightful introduction to your new surroundings.
Day 3 Snowmobile safari to the Amethyst Mine
There can be few better ways to explore the wilderness than by snowmobile. A snowmobile safari is not only thrilling but really showcases the scale of the landscape here and this is sure to be a real delight for adults and children alike. Today you will be given full instruction before heading to the top of Lampivaara Fell. You will travel two people per snowmobile (drivers must be 18 years old and hold a valid driving licence. Anyone more than 140cm tall can travel as a passenger; otherwise they will travel in a sled pulled by the guide's snowmobile).
Once you reach the top of the fell the views are reason enough to visit this place, but you are here to visit Europe’s only remaining Amethyst Mine. This is a surface mine which is covered to protect it from the elements and you will be given details about how the gems are formed over thousands of years before having the chance to dig for your very own Amethyst. This is a really fun activity for children and the rule is - if you find a gem and you can close your hand around it then you can take it away with you.
Day 4 Cross-country skiing
You will probably have noticed that cross-country skiing is a rather popular pastime in these parts and today it is your turn to try this most Scandinavian of activities. Your guide will give you full instruction before you join one of the many trails that wind their way around Luosto.
We assume that you have had no previous experience so please don’t worry if you’ve never tried any form of skiing in the past. In general we find that children pick it up exceptionally quickly. You can hire skis locally if you would like to explore independently later in the week.
Day 5 Reindeer park and safari
There is no way you can visit Lapland and not meet some reindeer, so this morning, after some free time you will be transferred by car to a local reindeer park.
The guides will lead you on a reindeer sleigh ride lasting around 30 minutes. This is a traditional and way to take in the beauty of the Lappish wilds. Children love this activity for the magical charm of the reindeer but for adults it will hopefully give you an interesting insight into animals which are an intrinsic part of the culture, traditions and knowledge of the indigenous Sámi people of Lapland.
Day 6 Husky safari
Husky safaris are always a highlight for families. You will be transferred to the local sled dog centre and will have a chance to look around before meeting your team of willing huskies. You will be given full instruction on how to handle a sled before heading off on the trail for a short husky safari. You will travel two people per sled and both of you will have the chance to drive (only children over the age of 15 are allowed to drive the sled).
Enjoy a relaxing evening with dinner in the hotel and hopefully an appearance from the Northern Lights tonight!
Day 7 Free day and Aurora snowshoe trek
Your final full day in Finnish Lapland has been left free for you and your family to design your own agenda. If you wish to be active you can hire snowshoes or cross-country skis or perhaps make use of Luosto’s nearby downhill slopes for the morning. Luosto also runs a weekly programme of activities so additional excursions can be booked in advance with us should you wish to make use of this vast playground one last time.
Luosto’s reputation as a Northern Lights destination is cemented by the presence of Sodankyla Geophysical Observatory around 30km away. In many cases you can see a display by simply stepping outside but if the Lights have eluded you then hopefully this evening you will have more luck.
Tonight you’ll be guided on a snowshoe search for the Northern Lights. You will head to a spot either deep in the forest or on the fells above the village. Away from all artificial lights and deep in the wilderness you should have an incomparable view if the Aurora should appear – a wonderful way to spend your final night in Luosto.
Day 8 Departure
Today you will bid farewell to Luosto as you are transferred to the airport for your flights home.

Luosto multi-activity taster sensation! 14 February 2014 by Rebecca Phillips Marques
It's not often that a holiday manages to exceed everyone's expectations and consistently keep both adults and children happy for a week, but this one did just that. As a family group of 3 adults and 2 children I can honestly rank this amongst our best holidays ever - so much fun!The taster holiday is a great way to do just enough of everything, with plenty of time for relaxing in the sauna too. The accommodation was very comfortable, food much tastier than it at first appeared, and the activities were well organised and hugely enjoyed by all of us. Something I appreciated was the absence of souvenir shops at all the attractions, and the authentic feel that the local guides and activity providers maintain. We didn't get to see the Aurora, but I wouldn't be surprised if we came back for another try!
This was the most amazing experience! 26 February 2013 by Mary Thorley
This was the most amazing experience that gave us a taster of different activities we might enjoy. We shall explore further holiday opportunities with you!
Very good resort 05 September 2012 by Floriane Laigret
Very good resort. We arrived late on Sunday night and we really appreciated the meal in our room. We had the multi activities week - a good choice.
Perfect holiday for families 09 August 2012 by Christine Valvatne
Perfect holiday for families as all activities were just long enough to get a taster, but within an 8 year old’s attention span. We were very impressed by being met by the representatives upon arrival. They were both very friendly and knowledgeable, and made us feel extra welcome. The amethyst mine was such a winner, we had to go back - and become members.
Luosto multi activity taster week 27 March 2012 by Tina Walpole
We had the most amazing time. All the activities were very well organised and the guides and instructors were really good. They were friendly, knowledgeable and safe. They catered for both adults and children and made you feel very relaxed.Snowmobile riding was very cool! When we did the reindeer safari it started to snow as we entered the forest, the scene was like something out of 'Narnia', magical! My 8 year old daughter was looking forward to the seeing the huskies most and she was not disappointed, they were amazing and being able to cuddle the puppies, THE BEST.We saw some minor displays of the northern lights during the week but on the Friday evening we did the snowshoe trek up a hill. The green hue in the sky to the north began to develop and move about, we were so thrilled. Then we noticed more lights coming up from the south, they both arched and met in the middle. They became a crown consisting of a bright white centre with green and pink lights all around. I just lay in the snow to experience it, while my husband took the photos. It was truly magnificent, we were so fortunate to have seen all of that when we know there is the risk of seeing nothing.I am telling all my friends to go, the overall experience was incredible, got to be the best holiday ever .If you stay in a suite take your own kettle as there isn't one in the kitchen and pack tea, coffee and anything else you can get in your suitcase, the supermarket is very expensive and the hotel food, limited, and a lot of reindeer!!We found a couple of local cafes that served burgers and chips and the bistro does decent pizzas so you won’t starve, but expect to buy extra meals out.
I really want to do the whole thing again! 08 March 2012 by John Price
I thought everything before the trip ran really smoothly. I had all the information I needed in plenty of time and felt very well prepared for the holiday re what clothes to take etc. When we arrived we were greeted by our reps who were brilliant. They were very approachable and could not do enough for you or to help you out. All the activities were brilliant and superbly run by Snow Games. I cannot put into words how impressed I was with them. Everyone who worked at Snow Games was very friendly and very helpful. The equipment they provided was in great condition and they were happy to loan absolutely anything we needed. The hotel was very nice, having a north facing room was a great bonus. I thought the food was of a high standard. The holiday was brilliant and I really want to do the whole thing again!
The most perfect week ever 09 February 2012 by Elizabeth Langwade
The most perfect week ever. All of the activities were great. We really enjoyed doing a taster trip and taking part in activities we might not have chosen ourselves.
A totally magical holiday 09 February 2012 by Debbie Smith
A totally magical holiday that created amazing lifetime memories. It was everything we dreamed of and more. Still on a high from it!! Great hotel, fab spa pool, loved the jets of water and the Jacuzzi with the twinkly lights on the ceiling. The activities slowly ramped up as the week went on. Very kind patient and understanding guides - Emy was a fab instructress and staff . A very knowledgeable man, Pascale at the Amethyst mine who was very funny, we loved him. He was also very generous because someone found a very impressive amethyst and he let them keep it. We were all amazed, she did not have to buy it!The snow chapel outside the Hotel Luosto was a bonus and on Christmas Eve someone carved a beautiful angel outside!! Wow it was so beautiful! Ice pews, alter and frozen flowers on the altar in blocks of ice!! Our hotel room very nice downstairs, but the shelves by the bedside upstairs in the mezzanine in 303 are not finished off. They are bare untreated wood! Also if your children are over 5 foot 4 they will hit they head on the ceiling which is very low upstairs. Our 15 year old who is 6 foot tall kept hitting his head. However it was cosy, clean and the balcony was lovely and large and in the perfect place to see the northern lights which we did see on Christmas Eve.There was no electric kettle in the room, please advise visitors to take one. We came back from our rather heavy going night snow trek quite desperate for a hot drink and after 11pm there was nowhere to get one, as the bar was closed. When the disco down stairs is on it’s a little tricky to get to sleep in 303, but we were so exhausted we did not stay awake for too long!! The lunch time menu in the hotel bar was very good value for money, only 10 euros for a two course meal with drinks- Souvenir shops were very reasonably priced.Father Christmas came to visit us in the restaurant and he went round the chalets on his sleigh with presents for all children 12 and under. It was so very authentically done, not tacky at all. To be near all the delighted children over Christmas Eve and day was fab. There is plenty of time to do your own thing there as well as set activities. We went downhill skiing on Christmas Day and had no problem getting a lesson booked. Food was good quality however, we did get exactly the same meal two nights in a row which was a bit disappointing. Beware... a bottle of wine (house) in the restaurant in the hotel was £25 so future clients watch out!Evening entertainment was good. There was candle everywhere, which was lovely and it does not get light till 10.30, weird but interesting. All the trips especially the husky trip on Christmas Day was out of this world. Puppies and photo opportunities to die for!! Pizza restaurants very good, best pizzas I have ever had but not cheap about £14 for a Margaretta, but worth it.
All in all, a perfect holiday! 25 January 2011 by Clare Bromly
Having endured 6 weeks of snowy weather prior to the holiday, I was questioning whether I should've booked a winter sun holiday. How glad I was that I hadn't done so as we had one of our best holidays ever. The weather was perfect, crisp cold clear days, lovely powdery snows, activities planned every day which were close by and well organised so there was no hassle or stress involved. The children were never bored which meant my experience was much more pleasant! The hotel was quiet and friendly, the swimming pool kept the children entertained each day, it could've been slightly warmer as we spent hours in there! The restaurant was very pretty with Christmas decorations and candles and the food was very good quality and plentiful. My son loved the snow fishing and he caught 5 fish, which was the record of the day. I caught one and felt as excited as if I'd landed Jaws! The husky farm had a month old puppy for us to cuddle which was a big hit with the children. All in all, a perfect holiday.
Excellent guides 12 January 2011 by Paula Wood
All the activity guides were excellent, very helpful and they couldn't do enough to help out.
Fabulous trip 22 February 2010 by Caroline Stevenson
We loved the whole of the holiday, it was a fabulous trip. Everything was excellent; I think the huskies were a big hit with all our family!! Thank you, we cannot thank you all enough for your help in moving the holiday due to my husband’s operation, and for the friendliness and helpfulness of your customer service team. We really liked the hotel, the Finnish people and all the activity provider staff so good. We will be going back!
We enjoyed our holiday very much 29 December 2009 by Joan Yap
Just to tell you that we enjoyed our holiday very much and appreciate the attention you gave us. We made wonderful friends during our taster week at Luosto and the guides were simply fantastic.
Excellent! 28 December 2009 by Geoff Beresford
Excellent. All activities were fantastic but the husky sleds were the best. This from a petrol head who thought he would enjoy the snowmobiles more! We thought it might be a bit rushed being a taster week with lots of activities, but found we had plenty of time to relax, explore and not feel pressured. The fact that everything was in the local area and didn't require daily long coach journeys was ideal. We saw many tour buses come and go with a lot of stressed looking people, whilst we wandered along to our activities without a care in the world - 5 stars! Planning another run next year.
The scenery was great 28 December 2009 by Katie Curnin
Snowmobile ride to the mine was my favourite activity. The scenery was great and the ride back down was thrilling. Richard really enjoyed the huskies and would have loved to spend more time with them. Hotel was great, very clean and warm despite lots of people tramping in and out all day covered in snow. All of the staff at Snow Games were wonderful. They were extremely friendly, well organised and knowledgeable. We could not have asked for a better service.
