Croatia is a country blessed by natural and manmade beauty. The Dalmatian Coast is a match for any archipelago in the world, cities such as Split and Dubrovnik are the stuff of legend and national parks protect stunning environments on the islands and the mainland.
The small town of Skradin, where we’ve based this 7-night active family adventure, is the ideal base from which to explore both the coast and the national parks and all that they offer.
This holiday makes the absolute most of Croatia’s natural environment. You’ll see the fabulous coastline and spend lots of time actively exploring rivers and national parks. There’s cycling in Skradin, a visit to the Krka National Park with a short walking tour through the park, hiking in Paklenica National Park, rafting on the fast-flowing Cetina River and kayaking through the Zrmanja River’s spectacular steep-sided canyons.
Read moreSkradin is a lovely place to stay with honey-coloured stone buildings, ubiquitous red roofs, a stunning marina and an excellent choice of restaurants. The town sits on the River Krka and right next to the Krka National Park, a veritable adventure playground of rivers, lakes, hills and forests.
There is a popular local beach on the inlet, just on the outskirts of the main part of town and very popular cycling and walking trail to the Skradinski Buk waterfalls. The waterfalls are magnificent and reminiscent of somewhere you might see in a tropical TV advert.
We can’t think of a better way to explore the very best of Croatia’s coast and country than on a multi-activity holiday. You’ll be safe under the tutelage, guidance and supervision of qualified guides so all you have to do is listen and then enjoy.

Agenda
Agenda
Show full agenda-
Day 1 Flights, Transfers and Welcome
You’ll fly into either Split or Zadar, both of which are well served from the UK. It’s approximately one hour to Skradin in the transfer vehicle from either airport. Your transfers will be grouped to the closest available departure time.
Depending on your arrival time, you might take the opportunity to stroll through the town. We recommend doing so whilst savouring an excellent ice cream from one of the many local vendors.
You’ll meet with our guide in the hotel lobby and join the other families at dinner. While you are enjoying your meal, the guide will tell you about the days ahead and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and get to know others in the group (the kids generally sort of circle each other for a while before getting on like a house on fire). Dinner will be a set 3-course meal, drinks not included.
Included Meals: Dinner -
Day 2 Visit to Zlarin Island
After transferring to Sibenik's port, you'll take the ferry to the island of Zlarin and head to its eponymously named town. This is archetypical Croatia and we’d urge you to take a walk along the waterfront and the secluded harbour and take the chance to grab a bite to eat in one of the cafes or restaurants (payable locally). You'll also have the opportunity to swim and snorkel on one of Zlarin's beautiful beaches.
On return to the mainland, you will spend the afternoon in Sibinek where you can explore the highlights of this historic town. You will be out for approximately 8 hours in total today, including transfers.
Dinner at the hotel is included during your time here (set menu, drinks not included), however, there are plenty of local restaurants nearby, which serve up a variety of tasty dishes, in case you fancy heading out for the evening instead.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Dinner -
Day 3 Visovac Island, Cycling and Krka National Park Walking Tour
You and your family will be picked up in the morning and head to the shores of Visovac Lake from where a small boat will transport you to Visovac Island. Enjoy a short tour of the Franciscan monastery and a walk through the beautiful park that is looked after by the monks.
After a spot of sightseeing, you’ll return to the lakeside to indulge in a swimming session before being transferred back to Skradin for lunch (payable locally).
Once you have finished your lunch, it’s time for some cycling. After an introduction and safety briefing, you will head towards the Krka National Park with amazing views along the way. Having arrived at the entrance of the park, your guide will take you on a walking tour (approximately 1 hour and mostly on flat paths) where you will see the 44m high waterfall Skradinski Buk. The falls are the last and most impressive in a long series of cascades along the Krka River. Over the millennia, water has carved through the karst limestone to create an idyllic spot.
After your walk, it’s time to cycle back to Skradin. You’ll cycle approximately 10km in total (2km on a road and 8km on gravel paths).
You will be out and about for approximately 6.5 to 7.5 hours including transfers and a 2-hour break for lunch.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Dinner -
Day 4 Hiking in the Paklenica National Park and Zadar
It’s just over an hour’s drive to Paklenica National Park this morning but every second of that drive is worthwhile. Paklenica is probably Croatia’s most remarkable national park and you could spend days marvelling at the flora, fauna and geology as well as exploring the vestiges of the lives lived by the nomadic stock herders who lived here during the summer months.
However, what most people come here to do is hike along the steep-sided and towering rocky walls of Velika (big) Paklenica and Mala (small) Paklenica canyons. These hugely impressive canyons are 14km and 12km long respectively but only between 400m and 800m wide. It’s really rather humbling to stand beneath those domineering canyon walls and look up as they soar skywards.
After your hike, you will visit Zadar, a city that is known for its old town and medieval churches.
Lunch is not included today, however, there is a local restaurant and shop, so you can either opt for a sit-down meal or a picnic lunch in the park.
You will be out for around 6 to 7 hours in total including breaks and transfers.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Dinner -
Day 5 Cetina River Rafting
This morning you’ll be driven south to the Cetina River where you’ll spend an exciting three hours rafting. It’s a lovely river with plenty of excellent views for those relaxing moments when you are not negotiating the rapids. A safety briefing, tuition and equipment are all included.
Lunch is not included today, however, there is the option of a nearby restaurant, or a local shop, if you would prefer to make up your own picnic.
Subject to when you finish rafting, there may be time to visit the historic centre of Split and spend time exploring the vestiges of Diocletian’s remarkable 4th century palace.
The journey time is approximately one and a half hours between the hotel and the rafting location.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Dinner -
Day 6 Free Day/Optional Activities
By now, you’ll know your local guides pretty well and they can advise you on optional activities which are available locally. Of course, you may very well fancy some downtime and the bathing area just on the outskirts of town is often a popular choice.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Dinner -
Day 7 Zrmanja River Kayaking
Another day and you’ll be visiting two more stunning Croatian rivers. The Zrmanja’s turquoise waters are ideal for kayaking and you’ll be provided with all the equipment you require before taking to the river in two-person kayaks. There’ll be plenty of time to hone your skills on a calm upper stretch of the river which will take you to the confluence with the Krupa River where there’ll be time for a swim and a picnic lunch.
After lunch, the Zrmanja cuts through some unforgettable country. There are steep-sided canyons, waterfalls (don’t worry, you don’t have to go down the big ones!), and gentle rapids where you can practice your paddling skills. You will be out rafting for approximately four to five hours today, including breaks.
Back in Skradin this evening, the group will gather one last time for a farewell dinner. It’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on your active week and swap contact details.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner -
Day 8 Departure
It’s time to leave Skradin and you’ll be driven back to either Split or Zadar Airport. Many of our clients choose to extend their stays in Croatia either in Split or on the islands. We can arrange flights to fit your preferred length of stay.

The Specifics
Holiday group size (approximate)
Minimum 4 persons, maximum 26 persons (approximately)
Please note: this trip requires a minimum of 4 people to run
Group Size
We always try to provide an approximation of the group size you can expect to be with for the duration of each of our holidays. It may be that you are joined by others for parts of your holiday (such as transfers and particular activities) but the above number reflects those you can normally expect to be with from beginning to end. If group size is something which is particularly important to you, please speak to our Travel Experts and they can suggest the best holidays for you.
Tailor-made holiday group sizes will vary for all activities as will the group size for any additional activities you book.
Minimum numbers required for a holiday to operate
Some of our holidays require a minimum number of participants to operate (as listed in the ‘Group Size’ section). If your holiday departure has not yet reached the minimum number, you will be told at the time of booking. In the unlikely event that your chosen date is not guaranteed by nine weeks before your scheduled departure date, we will contact you to discuss the available options as per our booking conditions.
Minimum and maximum age
The minimum age for this holiday can be found in the ‘Key Facts’ section of the holiday overview.
Younger family members may be able to participate but may not be able to take part in all activities. Please contact one of our Travel Experts if you have any questions.
Itinerary amendments
The order of activities listed in this agenda is provided for guidance only, your final and detailed itinerary will be provided either with your final travel documents (which are uploaded into your online account around a week prior to departure) or upon arrival.
Medical History and Advice
We want our holidays to be accessible as they can be and will do our best to accommodate any special requests and requirements where possible. We have a wide range of holidays and destinations and so our travel experts will help find the best holiday for you.
In order to give us the best possible chance to do this we ask that if you or any member of your party has any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday or has any special requirements, that you tell us at the time of enquiry or booking. You must also promptly advise us if any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday develops after your booking has been confirmed. You may need to provide a doctor’s note and proof of insurance in some cases as the health and safety of our clients is absolutely paramount.
In providing this information you are allowing us to work with our expert local partners to ensure that your whole party can enjoy the holiday. By letting us know in advance we can discreetly work with you to adapt any part of the holiday which may potentially be challenging. Being able to prepare for this in advance makes an incredible difference to what we can offer and minimises any impact on your party and the rest of the group.
Unfortunately, if you choose not to share this information with us in advance then it may limit some or all of the itinerary you have booked, and we cannot be held accountable for any additional costs or missed activities resulting from this.
It is vitally important that you advise us prior to departure of any medical or dietary condition relating to any member of your party so that we may notify our local staff before you arrive. We recommend only drinking bottled water from bottles with unbroken seals and be vigilant about the use of ice in drinks and ice cream.
Insurance
Insurance is not included in your holiday, but it is a pre-requisite to travelling with us. You will need to ensure that you have cover for all the activities that you will be participating in during your holiday.
It is extremely important that you take out a suitable travel insurance policy at the time of booking. Plans do sometimes change, and you will need this policy should you need to cancel your holiday.
If you are struggling to find a suitable policy then details of our preferred provider, who will cover you for all the activities we offer, can be found on our website by clicking here. Please note that this policy is available to EU residents under the age of 75 only.
The UK Foreign Office Advice
Our clients’ safety is at the centre of everything we do, and our operations team continually assesses and monitors the destinations we feature. We carry out thorough risk assessments and work closely with all of our suppliers to continually follow best practice. For up to date travel advice the UK government offers its Travel Aware website as well as the advice detailed below.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Advice
We receive all updates from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with regards to travel advice and we always ensure that we follow this advice in our operations. The FCO issues travel advisories for countries based on a very wide range of factors. They may provide notification about things as simple as a football match and crowds, or they may go so far as to advise against all travel to a region. We ask all our clients to refer to the relevant Travel Advice by Country for the destinations they are visiting in order to make an informed decision on the safety of the destination based on the details provided. It also provides vital information regarding entry requirements, embassy information, local laws and customs as well as specific safety and health. Guests should take responsibility for keeping themselves up to date with this advice. Please also ensure that, if you are transiting through another country, you have read the advice and meet the entry requirements for that destination too.
The FCO travel advice is applicable to British Passport Holders. Most governments will issue their own travel advice for a region and, if you are not a UK resident then you can find some helpful links below:
Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/
New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.safetravel.govt.nz/
Canadian Consular Affairs Bureau http://voyage.gc.ca/
The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english.html
If the FCO deems that there is an unacceptable level of risk for UK citizens then, together with the government, they may issue an advisory against all travel to a region or country. If such an advisory is published, then we will act accordingly, and this may require the cancellation, curtailment or amendment of a holiday itinerary. These decisions are made on the basis of ensuring our clients’ safety and will affect all clients on the holiday, regardless of their nationality.
If one of our local experts suggests an amendment due to a situation which develops locally then we may also take the decision to amend an itinerary appropriately.
If we have to cancel your holiday prior to departure you will be offered the option of an alternative trip (where any price difference will either be refunded to or covered by you) or a full refund of the monies paid.
If we have to curtail a holiday, then you will be refunded for any costs for the elements we have been unable to deliver, where we have been able to secure a refund from our suppliers. If we must reroute a holiday, then any basis for refund is determined on a case by case basis and dependent on whether the central holiday experience was provided or not.
Booking activities locally
Additional activities can be booked locally in almost all our destinations. However, as per our booking conditions, we cannot be held responsible for any injury or loss incurred through participation in activities which are booked at your destination outside of our holiday itinerary (see our ‘Terms and Conditions’ for further details).
When arranging any such activity please always ensure that safety is your primary concern.
In some of our destinations, you can borrow or hire equipment for use in your free time. You do so entirely at your own risk. You must ensure that you are correctly prepared, have the necessary equipment and knowledge (maps, etc.) and ensure that where applicable, you follow marked routes. We recommend discussing your plans with the local teams who will be able to advise on the most suitable options for you.
Always let the reception/guide know where you are planning to go and take a torch and mobile phone (with the hotel/guide’s phone number stored). It is also a good idea to leave your contact number and the time you expect to return to the hotel should the hotel need to contact you.
Flight schedule changes and connecting transportation
On your documentation, we will confirm your flight schedule. Sometimes the flight number, routing and timings might change prior to your departure. If the change is classed as a significant change then we will contact you to discuss this. Please see our booking conditions for details.
Flight schedule changes can impact on your pre and post-holiday travel arrangements if these have been booked separately to your holiday. We strongly recommend that you do not book transport (such as trains or transfers), car parking or non-connecting flights to the departure point for your holiday until you have received your final confirmed travel times when your final travel documents are issued. We are not responsible for the effect of any schedule change on your pre or post travel arrangements. We strongly recommend that you do not purchase non-flexible or non-refundable tickets to avoid cancellation and penalty charges.
Booking your own flights cancellation disclaimer
If you have chosen to book your own flights, then you will need to wait until we confirm to you that the holiday departure has met the minimum numbers required to run (if applicable to your chosen holiday). Once the holiday is guaranteed to run, you will be informed and you can then make your arrangements.
If transfers are included in your holiday, please ensure that any potential flights will be met by our standard transfers (speak to one of our Travel Experts for advice) otherwise private transfer supplements may be applicable. Once your flights are booked, please send us a copy of your detailed flight itinerary.
Please be aware that most tickets are non-refundable in the case of cancellation. For this reason, we strongly advise you check the rules of the ticket and check the limitations of your cancellation insurance before booking. We cannot be held liable, in the unlikely eventuality that we should be forced to cancel or amend your trip, for losses incurred relating to any flight booking you have made.
Terms and Conditions
Our full booking terms and conditions can be found on our website: https://www.activitiesabroad.com/booking-conditions
Swim stops
There are plenty of opportunities during our cruises for refreshing swim stops in some beautiful spots en route. Please note that this is not a supervised or guided activity and whilst safety equipment is provided on board and staff members will be present, each passenger is responsible for their own safety whilst in the water.

Excellent location, great varied trip 25 August 2019 by The Telfer Family
Fantastic. The guides Vana and Andro made the holiday a huge success, they tried exceptionally hard to meet the needs of all the group. The varied range of activities was good and the guides were able to involve everyone no matter of age or ability. We liked the hiking and rock climbing as the variety was superb. The river kayaking was a close second. Excellent location, great varied trip. Thought…

We loved it all! 25 August 2019 by The McLeish Family
The local guides were outstanding, Vana and Andro were absolute super stars. They were super organised and professional but also so much fun. They were wonderful with the children. We loved it all but especially the river canoeing, it was in a gorgeous setting and was lots of fun.

Another success - thank you! 28 July 2019 by The Williams Family
All family members enjoyed all the activities. Difficult to pick out one! From us 4 - 2 votes for sea kayaking, 1 vote each fro hike and rafting! The sea kayaking was an acivity new to us. It was broken up into managemable chunks with plenty of rest/swimming time. We went for a lovely (and filling!) lunch on the island at the half way mark which was very pleasant. it perhaps wold have been nicer…
Read more to spend a bit more time on the island to have a little look round instead of just eat lunch and then have to leave again. This was the only suggesion I could make as we all thoroughly enjoyed the day. Hiking was good and although a bit difficult in parts due to the heat, but enjoyable nonetheless. One of the highlights was the stop off for swimming in a beautiful natural pool (found thanks to our guides!) on the way up and down the mountain. The pace was just right for all of us and scenery stunning. The rafting was great fun and our guide ("Big Luka" - there are 2 apparently) was fantastic and very funny. The river kayaking was also great and our teenage sons especially enjoyed "going solo" down the 3m waterfall while we looked on in fear/wonder/amazement! The cycling was the hardest activity, definitely due to the intense heat. There were hills to climb which in the UK I'm sure wouldn't be an issue but in 34 degrees were pretty tough. However, our guide, Anna, was fantastic, and we were under no pressure to go faster as we all went at the pace of the slowest member. There was no shame in getting off to walk for periods if necessary. She kept us informed of distances/hills to cover and, importantly, when the swimming stop was coming! It was a long day but fortunately broken up by a 2 hour lunch stop back at the hotel where we could refresh. Definitely worth doing the "hard cycle", ie to monastery in the morning and the easier flat cycle to the waterfall in the afternoon, rather than the other way round as was on our itinerary. The guides obviously know best and what's preferable. We all made it and there was an incredible sense of achievement at the end (albeit lots of aching legs!). This was our second holiday with Activities Abroad. As previously, what made this holiday work so well were the guides. Our two guides, Dommy and Anna were both fantastic. They were fun, friendly, well-informed and good with the kids (even normally monosyllabic teenagers!). They worked long hours and nothing was ever too much trouble for them. Whatever they are earning they deserve a pay rise! This holiday included evening meals at the hotel. Although you may have felt "restricted" by this, there was need. The food was good and it was great to get together with the group in the evening to chat in a relaxed setting (rather than puffing your way up a mountain!). I think our group bonded well and the kids all got on and played cards together most nights. Although many of the activities on this holiday were the same (we did the Spain Pyrenees holiday previously), the holiday was very different and equally as good. The activities are a major part, but we found it's also about the location, scenery, culture and also the different families that form part of your group. If a family is considering doing a further holiday with Activities Abroad but is worried it might be a bit "samey" as they've done something similar before, I would encourage them to go for it as they will get completely new experiences and it's a great way of seeing a different country - from the mountains, roads, river or coastline. Another success - thank you!

Just a quick note to say thank you & that we had a fantastic time in Croatia - the holiday was absolutely brilliant - right from the first point of contact with yourself right through until the guides dropped us back off at the airport.
