The trip has been designed to suit families with children over the age of 8 years old (this does not preclude younger children but participation is at the guide’s discretion) and is designed to make the most of the incredible Arctic landscape. Your days will be spent snowmobiling across frozen lakes, snowshoeing through the forests, dog sledding and so much more. All activities have been designed for families to enjoy together.
Nellim sits within prime Aurora territory and is a fantastic spot from which to seek out a potential Aurora. The minimal light pollution means that if the skies are cloud-free and the solar activity is high, then your chances of spotting the Aurora here are very good indeed. The hotel is just a short walk from Lake Inari’s shoreline, and the views of the night sky from there are just perfect.

After arriving at Ivalo Airport, deep in the heart of Lapland, you will be transferred to Nellim in time to settle in to your room and enjoy dinner.* You’ll need a good night’s sleep tonight ahead of tomorrow’s adventures and festivities but as with all nights at Nellim, if you have a moment we thoroughly recommend heading down to one of the two nearby lakes after dinner to search the skies for the Northern Lights.

Included Meals: DinnerThis morning you will get your first experience of your new surroundings during a day out in the wilderness with your guide. Snowmobiling is thrilling and is one of the most exciting ways to explore the Finnish wilderness, allowing you to cover a lot of ground and see a great deal more of the landscape. Adults will travel two per snowmobile (taking it in turns to drive if both have a full driving licence and are 18 years or older) and children will be seated in a sledge pulled by the guide’s snowmobile. The tour lasts around two hours in total and is an ideal way to explore to take in your new surroundings.
This evening you will take part in a New Year’s Eve dinner at the hotel before heading down to the lake to see in the New Year in Finnish style. This is a lovely traditional event and people come from all over the village. With any luck, the Northern Lights will also make an appearance to round off the old year and welcome in the new.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerToday is all about getting to grips with some basic winter survival skills and you will enjoy activities such as fire building and igloo construction as well as ice fishing. Lunch will be cooked over an open fire. This is an ideal introduction to the outdoor lifestyle enjoyed in this part of the world and a real favourite with adults and children alike. In total, you will be out for approximately four hours.
Returning to the hotel this afternoon, you will have some time to relax before dinner. Later this evening, you will set off from the hotel in a minibus or car to travel to some of the best Northern Lights viewpoints in the area. Our guides will be armed with the latest weather and Aurora forecasts in order to optimise your chances of catching a display. One of the most successful spots is Paatsjoki Bridge, where you can look out at the flowing river below. You will be out for approximately three hours.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerSnowshoes may not be quite as high octane as snowmobiles, but nevertheless, they are great fun! If you try and explore the forests without these shoes on your feet, is unlikely that you will get very far. With the snowshoes on you will follow your guide into the wilds to hopefully witness some of the local flora and fauna at close quarters. You will be out for approximately two hours. Snowshoes can be hired throughout your stay at Nellim so you can explore the area independently if you wish.
The group will then return to the hotel for free time and dinner, before receiving an informative Northern Lights presentation from a guide. This will provide an insight into both the science and legends of this natural phenomenon so you will be well equipped for your inaugural Northern Lights activity this evening.
Tonight it’s time to wrap up warm before you head out to an Aurora Camp in a snowmobile-pulled sled. Here your guide will light a fire and serve hot berry juice while you keep watch for a potential Aurora. The camp will be a local Aurora hotspot which the guides have chosen for its unobstructed views of the northern skies. You will be out for approximately two and a half hours.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerPretty much as soon as local children can walk, they are taught to cross-country ski. This sport is something of a national obsession and so today you will receive full instruction before taking to the trails. It can take a bit of getting used to but hopefully, you will soon be gliding along the trails like a local. You will be out for approximately two hours. Skis can be hired locally and maps provided by reception should you want to explore independently later in your holiday.
After a well-deserved lunch, the group will head to the kennels where you will be welcomed by the excited barks of the dogs, eagerly awaiting your arrival. It is time for your husky safari!
Following a full introduction and safety briefing, you will take to your sleds (two adults per sled) and set off on your safari (travelling for approximately 1.5 hours). Children will typically be tucked up warmly in a sled pulled by the guide’s team of huskies. The route will vary depending on weather conditions but the experience of whizzing across frozen Lake Inari is sure to be a delight for all. There will be plenty of opportunities to take pictures with the animals before returning to the hotel to relax. You will be out for approximately 2 hours in total.

Today, as you get the chance to be up close with these gentle animals whilst also gaining an informative insight into the importance of reindeer herding.

The rather lovely Wilderness Hotel Nellim is a small family-run hotel, owned and run by Jouko and Mari Lappalainen and their family.
The building was once a village school but has been wonderfully restored and decorated in a warm and welcoming style to offer a laid-back and inviting atmosphere for visiting families.
The hotel has three main accommodation buildings surrounding a central courtyard. In the main building, you will find the majority of the rooms, the bar and restaurant, sauna and cosy lounge area. The two additional buildings are only around 50m from the main building and contain apartments and more hotel rooms.
Double or twin rooms: The hotel has 34 rooms in total which can be made up as either a double or a twin. These are all decorated in traditional Finnish décor and offer a warm and comfortable base. All are en-suite with shower room and hairdryer.

During your stay at Nellim, a popular option for families is to upgrade to one of the cosy and comfortable Arctic Suites. Situated in one of the annexe buildings they are across a small courtyard from the main building and restaurant. The Arctic Suites are a great option if you have a larger family or would like additional room and space to relax in after a day’s Arctic adventures.
The suites vary in size and in the facilities that they offer and are booked on a first-come, first-served basis according to the needs of your party.

Nellim offers a variety of cabins which offer varying facilities and which are mainly within easy walking distance of the hotel. Cabins are allocated on a first come, first served basis, according to the accommodation which most suits your party and availability. Specific facilities cannot be guaranteed. The standard cosy cabins are studio in style and offer a double bed, pull-out sofa bed, a small kitchenette (with kettle and coffee maker – so you may want to take your favourite hot drinks), a shower room (with hair dryer), an en-suite toilet, a fireplace and a private sauna
A large lakeside cabin can be requested for larger groups, but this is a few kilometres from the hotel and so transfers are provided for meals and activities

Located between 30 – 70 metres from the main building these log suites are designed to be the highest standard of accommodation Nellim offer. They are heated and decked out with cosy furnishings, ensuring a warm night’s sleep. Of course, you may not want to sleep much, choosing instead to keep a close watch on the sky!
The Aurora Bubbles are situated a short walk from the hotel amongst the trees. They have no running water but if you upgrade to spend the night in a Bubble then you will also keep your hotel room so facilities are within easy reach. The Kotas are all 25m² with their own private sauna, double bed and en-suite bathroom. There is also room for two extra beds for children.

We receive all updates from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with regards to travel advice and we always ensure that we follow this advice in our operations. The FCO issues travel advisories for countries based on a very wide range of factors. They may provide notification about things as simple as a football match and crowds, or they may go so far as to advise against all travel to a region. We ask all our clients to refer to the relevant Travel Advice by Country for the destinations they are visiting in order to make an informed decision on the safety of the destination based on the details provided. It also provides vital information regarding entry requirements, embassy information, local laws and customs as well as specific safety and health. Guests should take responsibility for keeping themselves up to date with this advice. Please also ensure that, if you are transiting through another country, you have read the advice and meet the entry requirements for that destination too.

If the FCO deems that there is an unacceptable level of risk for UK citizens then, together with the government, they may issue an advisory against all travel to a region or country. If such an advisory is published, then we will act accordingly, and this may require the cancellation, curtailment or amendment of a holiday itinerary. These decisions are made on the basis of ensuring our clients’ safety and will affect all clients on the holiday, regardless of their nationality.
If one of our local experts suggests an amendment due to a situation which develops locally then we may also take the decision to amend an itinerary appropriately.
If we have to cancel your holiday prior to departure you will be offered the option of an alternative trip (where any price difference will either be refunded to or covered by you) or a full refund of the monies paid.
If we have to curtail a holiday, then you will be refunded for any costs for the elements we have been unable to deliver, where we have been able to secure a refund from our suppliers. If we must reroute a holiday, then any basis for refund is determined on a case by case basis and dependent on whether the central holiday experience was provided or not.
Additional activities can be booked locally in almost all our destinations. However, as per our booking conditions, we cannot be held responsible for any injury or loss incurred through participation in activities which are booked at your destination outside of our holiday itinerary (see our ‘Terms and Conditions’ for further details).
When arranging any such activity please always ensure that safety is your primary concern.
In some of our destinations, you can borrow or hire equipment for use in your free time. You do so entirely at your own risk. You must ensure that you are correctly prepared, have the necessary equipment and knowledge (maps, etc.) and ensure that where applicable, you follow marked routes. We recommend discussing your plans with the local teams who will be able to advise on the most suitable options for you.
Always let the reception/guide know where you are planning to go and take a torch and mobile phone (with the hotel/guide’s phone number stored). It is also a good idea to leave your contact number and the time you expect to return to the hotel should the hotel need to contact you.
On your documentation, we will confirm your flight schedule. Sometimes the flight number, routing and timings might change prior to your departure. If the change is classed as a significant change then we will contact you to discuss this. Please see our booking conditions for details.
Flight schedule changes can impact on your pre and post-holiday travel arrangements if these have been booked separately to your holiday. We strongly recommend that you do not book transport (such as trains or transfers), car parking or non-connecting flights to the departure point for your holiday until you have received your final confirmed travel times when your final travel documents are issued. We are not responsible for the effect of any schedule change on your pre or post travel arrangements. We strongly recommend that you do not purchase non-flexible or non-refundable tickets to avoid cancellation and penalty charges.
If you have chosen to book your own flights, then you will need to wait until we confirm to you that the holiday departure has met the minimum numbers required to run (if applicable to your chosen holiday). Once the holiday is guaranteed to run, you will be informed and you can then make your arrangements.
If transfers are included in your holiday, please ensure that any potential flights will be met by our standard transfers (speak to one of our Travel Experts for advice) otherwise private transfer supplements may be applicable. Once your flights are booked, please send us a copy of your detailed flight itinerary.
Please be aware that most tickets are non-refundable in the case of cancellation. For this reason, we strongly advise you check the rules of the ticket and check the limitations of your cancellation insurance before booking. We cannot be held liable, in the unlikely eventuality that we should be forced to cancel or amend your trip, for losses incurred relating to any flight booking you have made.

We had an amazing time and made so many memories. Our most memorable part of the holiday was seeing the Northern Lights on Christmas Eve - magical! The husky sledging was our favourite activity. We also really enjoyed the wilderness walks as the guides were fantastic. The travel experts offered lots of options and explained all of the ever-changing testing requirements too.
All of the activities were superb. If I had to pick one it would have to be the husky ride.

The hotel is superb and everyone really friendly and helpful. The food was of high quality and very tasty, it was varied enough for us not to get bored in a week although vegetarians might find it a bit more tricky. The accommodation was good and the beds very comfortable, showers good and all in all the facilities exceeded our expectations considering how remote the hotel is. The snowsuits and boots provided by the hotel were very good and kept us warm and dry. All in all, the most memorable holiday with a wide range of exciting activities in the most spectacular setting.
