You might be tempted by Costa Rica, frequently ranked as one of the happiest countries on Earth. Despite being a rather tiny place, covering just 0.01% of our planet’s landmass, it is jam-packed with life and home to 5% of the world’s species of flora and fauna.

Our itinerary allows you to drop right in the middle of it all in the most active manner possible. Take a boat trip through Tortuguero National Park and get wildlife-watching; camp in the rainforest of Sarapiquí and go white-water rafting and zip-wiring nearby. You’ll also hike by a volcano and help plant trees at a forest estate.

There’s Ecuador, where you’ll spend some time touring Quito, 2,850 metres above sea level. One of the highest capital cities on the planet, it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site with a beautiful mix of indigenous and Spanish architecture. Adventures around mountains of fire lie ahead: horse-ride like traditional Chagra cowboys through the country’s Avenue of Volcanoes, cycle in the direction of active Cotopaxi, and descend Tungurahua on mountain bikes!

Follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and visit the Galápagos Islands. You’ll see just as much stunning wildlife as the great man himself: giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions, and penguins to name but a few! Now, Darwin may have gone on to change the course of history, but he definitely didn’t have the chance to go mountain biking, as you will on the luscious inland trails that can be found here. Sea kayaking and snorkelling will familiarise you with all kinds of underwater life found in bustling reefs by the shore, while a hike of the Sierra Negra volcano will give you the most amazing panoramas.

Leaving South America, you might fancy our family holidays to the island of Borneo: it’s an animal-lover’s paradise! You’ll head to several internationally renowned conservation centres to see the inspiring work that takes place there. Learn about sun bear and proboscis monkey protection, as well as heading behind the scenes at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Sanctuary – keep your eyes peeled for these highly intelligent creatures of the forest. At the mighty Gomantong Caves, you’ll be able to look at the secret life of the birds and bats that flutter inside.
